Photo by Lana Creer-Harris money the district needed came from Olsen made it to the second slide before upset audience members began pelting him with questions about the recent increases in their property taxes. Many had problems prob-lems with the increase in their property's value and the lack of fairness in those assessments. Utah County Assessor Chris Poulsen steppedto the microphone - to hushed boos from the audience audi-ence - and asked for the floor. He explained that the county takes recently sold property and tries to predict what other properties would be worth. Because of the huge spike in volume, they had to re-evaluate 100,000 properties. "We weren't prepared for it," Poulsen said. He next began to answer the agitated crowd's questions. He listened to everyone's complaints, gave them his address and told the somewhat mollified crowd to come to his off ice and he'd explain how the assessment was done. If citizens don't believe the assessment as-sessment was fair, they can have a hearing. They need to supply their assessment and information for comparable homes in their town and in another town. The deadline to contend a property assessment as-sessment is September 17. "Come in, and ask for Chris," Poulsen said, ending his presenta-tioa presenta-tioa School board member Debbie Swenson told the crowd, "You're paying more, and there are those who pay less - it's evea" Some citizens continued to maintain that the school district was getting a windfall and they didn't like it. Olsen explained the process is set so the school district doesn't gain a windfall; some tax valuations go up, some down, and some stay the same. District Superintendent Chris Sorensen said the district expects 1,000 new kids a year to come into the schools. Bonds will be retired, but new bonds will replace those.
