Show -I, SMRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, August 16, 2007 9 Vote no to fund i Preserve the Springville City Park! La a 1 O V CHrtftr Editor Has ya seed the pich-ers pich-ers of the new liberry and them other buildings in Springville? They shore is purty! They must a gonna cost lotsa money. (That's how us ignorant, igno-rant, uninformed barking dogs speak; I'd like to now switch to my college-educated barking-dog mode.) Yes, the new buildings will be beautiful. And they will cost quite a bit. Can we afford them? Since the money has to come from somewhere (taxes), we, the citizens of Springville, should be allowed al-lowed to decide. But what we cant afford is to destroy the Springville City Park. According to Mary Fin-ley, Fin-ley, author of The History of Springville, the park was laid out in 1851, soon after .the city was settled 156 years ago! Do we really want to destroy that legacy? Don't we have more respect for our ancestors than that? Many of the trees in the park were planted in 1880. Why do we need to kill them just to put all city-owned city-owned buildings on the same block? Why should we trade grass and trees for parking lots? The previous City Hall was built in 1880, and replaced re-placed with the current building in 1965. Sure, it is 42 years old. So what? It's not falling apart, and will serve for a few more years. The "not earthquake proof argument is bogus. First West not mde enou$i (or more traffic! Dear Mayor and City Council: It is 4a.m. in the morning morn-ing as I am writing this letter. Last Friday, around 10 a.m., a Springville fire truck drove past our home on 100 West across from the park, with its siren on, which was good, because it drew to my attention Springville Herald 269 E. 400 South Springville, UT 84663 An edition of The Dafy Heraki a Lee Enterprises, Inc. Now, with the fire station on Main Street as it sits on the business side of the street, the traffic light so close, and the wide street, the traffic can see better when the fire trucks are called out on a fire job. The traffic on Main Street is accustomedf to the lights flashing and there is more space on the road to see, and to pull over. People can see and prepare for the situation Editor The La Raza (The Race) mob is hostile to these United States. Many members mem-bers of "The Race" want the Western United States to become a Mexican state they call Aztlan.' Is it right or constitutional to fund, using expropriated wealth taxed from Americans, Ameri-cans, the National Council Coun-cil of La Raza? Should our tax dollars fund a private group that seeks to see the borders of the U.S.-Mexico eliminated? The La Raza organization actively supports legislation that would grant amnesty to millions of Mexican citizens citi-zens who have illegally invaded in-vaded and occupied our nation, na-tion, as well as amnesty for other illegal aliens within the borders of these United States. Yet the Hope Fund Act of 2007 would give La Raza millions of tax dollars. dol-lars. Who funded the activities before there were iimk food vending machines in schools? We have all seen article after article and report after re port concerning how our young people are overweight A 2003 srudv bv the Utah Department of Health found that one-fourth of the state's elementary school kids were at un healthy weights! Whose fault is that? Is 4 the schools? Partly, because they have allowed junk food to be so easy to obtain with vending machines. It is mostly the parent's fault because people have become so lazy. So many young parents do no cook anymore. Thiy eat out or purchase ready made and convenience food! They are gaining weight from these habits and so are their chil dren. But back to the junk food. Why do we have it in the schools? The obvious reason is that some people do not care about kkfs health. They only care about the money they are going to make to fund school activities. A recent article said that cookies,' cakes, soda pop and other unhealthy snacks could be banned from vending machines ma-chines in schools under a rule purposed by the Utah State School Board . The Utah Board of Education has voted to draft a rule to ban snacks from vending sites on campuses for all grade levels. What an idea! If the vending machines weren't in the schools, the junk food would not be readily available. How about putting healthy food mth ter still, what about no food - no vending machines! How did we old people ever make it through school without junk food and a drink in our hands all day? The new rale being drafted by the state board would also limit snacks to those with 250 calories, no more than 35 percent per-cent fat, 10 percent total cabries from saturated fat and zero trans fat, and no more than 20 grams of carbohydrates. Diet sodas would be allowed Do any of those board members know that the fake sugar in those diet drinks makes you hungry and so you eat more? The director of child nutrition in the state said that, "they have to start somewhere'' Start? Just do i - do away wih all the junk food Our young people are so used to eating junk that they think is food, that they dm anymore Schools should be teaching young people how to eat cor rectly and so should their parents. Children can be taught to eat healthy foods. Early intervention is the key. According to a 2006 legislative audit, schod vending ma chine sales bring in $3.75 million annually! We wonder how much school lunch food is being thrown away because kids are full of junk food? One Cottonwood Heights lawmaker has sponsored a hand ful of bills in the state legislature to curb sweets in schools. AI were defeated It is all about money! What about our kids? Cindy Olsen, 500 E. 460 North, Mapleton, was cited for dogs at large. Travis Lee Fullmer, 184 N., 700 East, Santaquin, was arrested ar-rested for an outstanding warrant.
