Show SPRINGVILLE. HERALD Thursday, August 9, 2007 Max Knight Continued from page 1 many years with Knight. For years, Knight helped with the American Legion's honor guard, providing military salutes at veterans' funerals. A past commander of the Springville American Legion Le-gion who served in the U.S. Navy, Knight helped organize Memorial Day programs and erect veterans' veter-ans' memorials at Spring-ville's Spring-ville's two cemeteries, Davis said. The Springville Ki-wanis Ki-wanis Club has also benefited ben-efited through Knight's membership through the years. "He's probably Mr. Kiwanis," said Glenn Al-leman, Al-leman, a member of the Springville Kiwanis Club."; "He went to all the big events back East and all over the country. The scone sale happened every ev-ery year largely because of Knight's efforts to organize or-ganize and run it, Alle-man Alle-man said. "I don't know how the heck we're going to run the Kiwanis without him," Alleman said. As an electrician, Knight was always willing will-ing to lend his expertise to those in need. Lighting and sound systems were set up at the Spring Acres Arts Park largely through volunteer assistance from Knight, who spent many hours, helping with the electrical wiring. "He donated a lot of time up there (at the park) to help us all out," said Mike Duffin, co-owner of AV Productions, a Springville company that handles sound and lighting at the arts park. "It was great to be able to learn from him the knowledge that he had." Knight frequently attended at-tended arts park events and was always eager to help if any problems arose during a performance, perfor-mance, even if the problems prob-lems weren't electrical-related. "He always seemed to grab things by the horns and just do it," Duffin Duf-fin said. "He donated so much time and effort and knowledge, it's going to be hard not to have him there." Martin Conover, a friend of Knight's and former for-mer owner of the Springville Spring-ville Herald newspaper, said Knight would lend a hand - free of charge - when there were electrical elec-trical problems with the printing press. t As a member of the Springville City Council, Knight was "always willing will-ing to build, never to tear down," Conover said. "Max was a very positive person and that's why people liked to work with him," he said. "We'll miss him because he was such a source of knowledge and a person to look forward for-ward rather than always be looking backward." Blvd., Provo Knight served as a councilman from 1980 to 1988. Former Springville mayor Delora Bertelsen said she ran with Knight and Pete Roundy on the Progressive party ticket iwhen she first ran for city council and the three end-'ed end-'ed up serving two; terms together. . t "He was really involved . in the development of Spf ingville's power," Bertelsen said: As a city councilman, he was instrumental in-strumental in the process of building Springville's Whitehead power plant. Pat Monney, former superintendent of the Springville City Power Department, De-partment, said he worked with Knight when Knight was on the city council. He and Knight traveled around the country investigating inves-tigating various power system options. The two became close friends and their families have traveled trav-eled together as well. "This city and all of, its organizations have lost a real valuable individual because he just gave to everything," ev-erything," Monney said. "Max was a real charitable charita-ble individual.... He really gave of his time." Knight's reach throughout through-out the community extended ex-tended into the arts as well. He spent many hours volunteering his time to work with the electrical system at the Springville Museum of Art. He was also a founding member of the Springville Playhouse, which is celebrating cel-ebrating its 60th anniversary anniver-sary this year as Utah's longest continuously running run-ning community theater. "If the playhouse needed anything, even after he retired from the board he was right down there to serve," said Bertelsen, who currently serves on the playhouse's board of directors. Knight and his wife Kolene donated financially finan-cially to many of the statues stat-ues placed throughout Springville through the Statues to Live By program pro-gram and purchased one statue outright that was placed on the northeast corner of the 200 S. Main intersection. When the Springville World Folkfest was organized orga-nized more than 20 years ago, the Knights were there to help with that as well. "Right from the very beginning of the Folkfest, he has been an amazing amaz-ing amount of help," said Folkfest General Director Direc-tor Teddy Anderson. Max and Kolene housed Folkfest dancers in their home for many years and frequently helped out at Folkfest events. "My description of him has always been just a warm, friendly personality, personal-ity, always eager to help, and a good friend that will be greatly missed," Anderson said.
