Show Thursday, March 1,2007 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 11 lift 5gtJ II Students enter Do the Write Thing Contest Sydney joyner SJHS STAFF WRITER Mrs. Rice and Mrs. Jolley's eighth grade language lan-guage arts classes entered en-tered the "Do The Write Thing" contest, sponsored spon-sored by the Utah Board of Juvenile Justice, along with one thousand other students from around the state. The theme for the contest con-test this year was, "How Can I Prevent Violence in my Community?" The students preformed research re-search on youth violence and then they generated essays, short stories, poems posters, movies, slide show presentations, and comics in response to the theme. Winners were selected from each teacher's classes. class-es. Below are excerpts from some of the essays written by Mrs. Rice's students: In part of Emily Ireland's Ire-land's paper she wrote, "The most important side effect of this exposure to violence is that the public pub-lic have become immune to the violence; they've become cold. We see and hear, about it everyday so we can't seem to separate sepa-rate fantasy from reality. When people of our community com-munity don't care or take the time to know, that's when it become danger-rbus." danger-rbus." You should do what is right and not what is cool. Ever since then I've stopped all the violence I've seen so nobody gets hurt." . In Alexandra Bennett's paper she wrote, "Sometimes "Some-times solving small levels of violence is rather easy. But when we move up to the bigger and more dangerous dan-gerous levels of violence the problem gets harder and harder to solve. In my opinion the best way to solve violence is to try to prevent it before it starts. And the easiest way to do that is to be nice to everyone and make sure everyone knows they are wanted and needed. If someone doesn't feel needed or wanted then, they are more likely to perform violence." Below are some excerpts ex-cerpts from the winners of Mrs. Jolley's classes. In second place, Cater Jennings, story he wrote, "I helped Jerry, up and made it so I was supporting support-ing most of his weight, he looked awful. It amazed me what a person can do with his bare hands. Jerry's Jer-ry's face was covered in blood from his nose and his lips. He had two black eyes and a bug bump on" his forehead. He was full of tears and he may have broken one of his ribs by the way he clutched them as he walked. I was surprised sur-prised he was still conscious." con-scious." In Tyler's paper, he wrote, "Also I have affected af-fected my friends because I am a big guy, I'm buff. And I look like I'm a kid that would be involved in violence but looks aren't everything, I am actually a nice guy." There were other students stu-dents who also won from both classes. There will be more on them next week. w ill -vriJ 1 b6 n I f"- K. ., , J, L,. - !-- ..--1. .....
