Show Thursday, February 1 5. 2007 Students can now enroll in IB World School in Provo SPRINGVILLE HERALD 13 Provo High School is on the brink of becoming Utah's newest International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The designation IB World School indicates a school that is authorized to offer an IB program; PHS will soon offer the first IB Diploma program in Utah Valley. Final approval from the International Baccalaureate Organization is expected in May and courses will begin be-gin with the fall semester of 2007. Students who wish to make a school change request in order to enroll in the new program, are asked to make that request by Friday, Fri-day, Feb. 16, 2007. Students from other districts, dis-tricts, many of whom currently cur-rently travel to Salt Lake to participate in an IB program, pro-gram, can now take advantage advan-tage of an excellent pro gram, closer to home. To qualify as an IB World School, Provo High has gone through a rigorous process, including on-sites visits from IB representatives. representa-tives. Curriculum, teacher training and administrative administra-tive support must all meet exacting standards to earn the designation IB World School Students in the IB Diploma Diplo-ma program are required to take courses in six subject sub-ject areas including math, experimental science, arts and humanities and a second sec-ond language. In the World Languages area alone PHS is expanding its curriculum to meet student interest offering of-fering Spanish, French, German, Latin, Mandarin Chinese and, next year, Arabic. The IB Diploma program is a two-year course of Herbert Lester Cole Herbert L. Cole passed away peacefully on February Febru-ary 10, 2007 after fighting a courageous battle with Leukemia; his family was at his side. He was born in Gary, Indiana, on November Novem-ber 15, 1940 to Norman Culver and Alma Saxton Cole. After spending most of his childhood in Indiana the family later moved to Springville, Utah. Herb graduated from Springville High School. In 1961, Herb married Karen Adams. They were blessed with four children: Patrick, Pat-rick, Trish, Heather and Mike. They were later divorced. Herb later met Ann Stallings. He enjoyed the rest of his life with Ann by his side. Herb worked in many capacities throughout his life including an Officer for the Department of Wildlife Resources, Auxiliary Aux-iliary Springville policeman, police-man, Johnson Tire, Utah Service, security guard at Pacific States Cast Iron, and Stouffers. He also served in the National Guard. He enjoyed horses, camping camp-ing and the outdoors. He also loved farming and enjoyed en-joyed spending time with his friends and family. Herb is survived by his loving wife and companion, compan-ion, Ann; his children: Patrick Pat-rick Cole, Trish (Tony) Ferguson, Fer-guson, Heather Cole, Mike (Crickett) Cole, Jason (Ou-lai) (Ou-lai) Gatley, Andrea (Ter-ron) (Ter-ron) Horton, and Jennifer Gatley; his brothers and sisters: sis-ters: Norman (Judy) Cole, i Herbert Lester Cole Si ' ';S i - ; Herbert Lester Cole Mary (David) Clements, and Nora (Ronald) Ostler; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Ronald; and grandchild, Scott Ferguson. A celebration of Herb's life will be held on Tuesday, Tues-day, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 South, Springville, with a viewing from 9:30-11 a.m. prior to services. Students may come to PHS in grade 9 or 10 for pre-IB courses and then enter en-ter the Diploma Program in grade 11. To earn the IB diploma, students must pass tests in each of the six subject sub-ject areas, take a Theory of Knowledge course, write an extensive essay paper and participate in Creativity, Action Ac-tion and Service activities.
