Show Thursday, February 15, 2007 5PRINGVILLE HERALD 3 Deanne Mapleton man to lead Park Elementary neiquist Continued from page 1 grade orchestra and general music. She continues to provide pro-vide extracurricular activities activi-ties for her students. Helquist knows how essential es-sential it is to get students properly set-up on their individual indi-vidual instruments, followed by careful and sequential teaching of left-hand and right-hand skills, vocabulary, vocabu-lary, rhythm, music reading and notation. Therefore, her orchestra program is designed de-signed to help students properly prop-erly develop these skills so they will play in tune, with good tone, and be well prepared pre-pared for successful experiences experi-ences in later years. Nebo Performing Arts Council's (NPAC) Chairperson, Chair-person, Susan Tullis, said, "Deanne Helquist plays a key role in Springville's world-class orchestra program. pro-gram. A student's first experiences with a new instrument in-strument are the foundation to continued success, and Deanne well understands this. She teaches with great expertise and high expectations. expecta-tions. She is a team player with students, colleagues and the community." "She is not shy of taking on large groups of students. Deanne taught 154 sixth graders last year at the middle school! Furthermore, she regularly attracted appreciative ap-preciative audiences that filled the entire high school auditorium to watch 6th and 7th graders perform! She's an amazing teacher and a tremendous asset to Spring-ville," Spring-ville," said Tullis. Nebo District Arts Coordinator Coor-dinator Julie Christofferson said, "Deanne Helquist is a phenomenal teacher! She manages to keep students engaged, focused and excited about learning stringed instruments. She has high expectations of students while maintaining maintain-ing an enjoyable learning environment. BYU string pedagogy class students can often be found observing her teaching techniques. She is most deserving of the award for outstanding Junior Ju-nior High Music Educator." Helquist is married to Lyle Helquist. They are the parents of three children: Jens, Jennie and Jay and have two granddaughters, Harley and Camder. Her music: influence has carried car-ried over to her family as she has helped her children learn to play various instruments instru-ments and to appreciate all types of music. Next to her family, teaching teach-ing is Helquist's second love. It is her belief that an orchestra experience should instill in students an understanding and love of music that will have a positive posi-tive influence on them for their entire life. Being part of an individual's education in fulfilling those objectives brings excitement to her. Helquist said, "Watching my students grow, develop and master their musical skills is the most exciting thing about being a music teacher. Helping others to achieve these goals is absolutely abso-lutely delightful and so very fulfilling."
