Show 14 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, May 25, 2006 Five receive Alumni Scholarships Five outstanding students were awarded the Springville High School Alumni Scholarship. All of these young people have shown outstanding abilities, and the alumni were happy to present them with this year's awards. The scholarships were presented pre-sented at a breakfast held for them and their parents. Four of the awards came from the alumni and were presented o 806-9500 Springville Exit 260 off 1-15 to Catherine May Cooley, James Anthony Day, Rachel Lauren Jacobson and Can-dice Can-dice Sowards. , The fifth award was given by Lee Taylor in honor of his brother, Kent Child's Taylor, who was an alumni of SHS and lost in action in Viet Nam in 1969. It went to Amanda Leona Theobald. The alumni congratulate these students on their outstanding out-standing achievements thus far and wish them luck and success in their upcoming university years. The alumni scholarships are made possible each year through past alumni joining, the alumni association and through various fund-raisers., All funds are handled through the Nebo Foundation Founda-tion and are tax deductible. FFA students receive awards ey something back to the school and thought this was a good way to do that. They nave since joined with the Friends of SHS and invite all alumni to join them in this worthy cause. The Greenhand Degree is awarded award-ed to those students who have accomplished their first year in the, FFA organization, organiza-tion, developed a supervised agricultural experience program, pro-gram, and have a deep interest inter-est in agriculture. There were eight different production awards given at the banquet: t Agriculture Placement, Diversified Livestock Live-stock Production, Sheep Production, Pro-duction, Small Animal Care, Swine Production, Equine Science, Grain Production and Turf and Grass Management. Manage-ment. Many students were also recognized for things such as, memorizing the creed, Meat Judging, Live-" stock Judging, Horse Judging, Judg-ing, Ag. Communications and Ag. Mechanics. On May 9, they had nine FFA members who applied to be chapter FFA officers for next year. They had to fill out an application, write a 500 word essay, take a FFA knowledge test, conduct a five-minute presentation and have a ten-minute interview. The chapter officers for the 2006-07 year: Mikky Helmer, president; Katie Ashby, vice president; Taky isha Williamson, secretary; Austin Jensen, treasurer; Bryn Bertelsen, reporter; Katelyn Jordan, historian; and Heather Allen, sentinel. ' Niel joined more than 80 other young leaders representing repre-senting as many high schools from throughout Utah. HOBY Leadership Seminars bring together a select group of high school sophomores to interact with groups of distinguished distin-guished leaders in business, busi-ness, government, education educa-tion and the professions to discuss present and future issue. The goal is to provide the youths a stimulating forum for leaning about the free market and democratic; process while broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self -develop- ' ment. HOBY leaders are! also challenged to return; to their communities to! perform at least 100 hours ! of community service ; within 12 months following ' the seminar. Niel hopes to ! attend the National HOBY; Seminar this August in ! Washington, D.C. as a; Utah HOBY Ambassador. ; Niel has served in stu-! dent council - this past school year and was re-; cently elected Junior Class ' President for the '06-'07; school year at Springville ; High.
