Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, Hay 25,2006 Comments Parents need to Editor: I am a new resident to the beautiful State of Utah, as of January. I've been pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of people in stores and places of business. Senior Citizens at your Center have been very friendly, courteous and most helpful. I have lived in several states, Oklahoma, Colorado, Illinois, California, Montana and now Utah. No where in any of these states have I encountered en-countered children who are allowed to run around in a restaurant, who can't stay seated at their table, make loud noises at the table in an attempt to gain parental attention, at-tention, or a parent who deliberately de-liberately tickles a child and make that child squeal and scream at the top of its voice in a public place where most patrons are seeking a quiet dinner. I have raised three children without beating them, could take them anywhere with me and know they would mind whatever I said. They stayed with me and were not allowed to run t all over a, restaurant or 'store. We could take our children to a restaurant and know they ' had manners enough to eat in any public place. Do they behave be-have this way in schools? I was taught that discipline begins be-gins at home. To be undisciplined undisci-plined was to show disrespect disre-spect to my parents. My daughter hates to shop at Wal-Mart because parents let their children run wild! Another instance is a young mother entering a local lo-cal place of business, talking on a cell phone (which all mothers know is the signal for a child to misbehave); has two young children with her who begin to run wild in the store where expensive equipment equip-ment was displayed, even jumped up into a display window. win-dow. I didn't yell at my children, chil-dren, but they were taught right from wrong and taught manners; and discipline was administered with love and consistency. Children are not money, perhaps as much as $1200 per year, but will also improve a vehicle's safety and dependability. The Car Care Council offers of-fers these gas-savings maintenance main-tenance and driving tips: Check your venicle gas cap. I am truly saddened and appalled to see so many unruly un-ruly children almost everywhere every-where I go in this area. Children Chil-dren don't ask to be born, but once they are, parents do owe the child or children an upbringing that wiU promote a responsible, caring adult, who in turn will be a wonderful wonder-ful parent. I'm certainly not an expert on child rearing, nor have I written any books on the subject. We all make mistakes mis-takes raising our children because be-cause we are all human and not perfect. They carried car-ried wildflowers to lay on the graves of their confederate soldiers who were buried there. A As the women moved from one grave to another, they noticed another group of graves off to one side. These were the graves of Union soldiers who had died on the same field of battle. The women stopped to lay flowers on those graves as weU. Those women had compassion fore those who died fighting their husbands, fathers and sons. It was from this small act that the Grand Army of the Republic decided to designate a special day to honor the fallen from both sides May 30, 1868 was set aside for the purpose of strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country. l New York was the first state to proclaim this day for specific remembrance of those fallen in battle, and in 1882, the holiday was adopted across the United States, named Memorial Day and established to be held the last Monday in May. What began as a day to remember those who gave their lives in war, soon included memorial tributes to all who have passed away. ; Perhaps the recognition of a Memorial Day was for us to remember the cost of war so that it would not happen again. But it has-again and again. We must not forget those who gave their lives and are now giving their lives that we might enjoy the freedoms we have. Veterans in our community will commemorate Memorial Memori-al Day, honoring those who have given their lives for our country, on Monday in the Evergreen Cemetery. We should pause with them to remind ourselves of the high cost of freedom and how fortunate we are to enjoy the blessings of it. What is happening in our country? Editor: I shudder at the demise of George W. Bush from, and the ascendancy of Hillary Clinton to the Presidency. It seems to be a Hobson's choice, with no clear alternative alterna-tive of returning our nation to the independence it once enjoyed under the Founding Fathers. At age, 78 I have lived through many presidencies starting with Roosevelt. I could never understand the steady drift away from national na-tional independence both during Democrat and Republican Repub-lican administrations over the generations. Then I bought the book by Professor Profes-sor Carroll Quigley, called "Tragedy and Hope: A History Histo-ry of the World in our Time" ( h t t p.: a o b s -store.comstorepagel2-ss6.html223), and found out ,why this is going on. ' It is not by happenstance; in fact, it follows a design advocated ad-vocated by Carroll Quigley. TThe late Georgetown University,, Univer-sity,, professor explained: "The argument that the two parties should represent opposed op-posed ideals and policies, be fooled by the temporary use of troops at the border. Amnesty should be considered, consid-ered, if and only, when the government can demonstrate, demon-strate, on a permanent basis, that it can stanch the illegal border crossings and get serious se-rious about employment authorization. au-thorization. In other words, an amnesty provision should not be part of an enforce- ment bill but subsequent to it. Very subsequent. . Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American Ameri-can people can 'throw the rascals out' at any election without leading to any profound pro-found or extensive shifts in policy." In addition to this, Quigley argued, there is one other benefit to having two political politi-cal parties, each with the same program, bhould eitner party oecome corrupt or unenterprising un-enterprising while in office, "Then it should be possible to replace it, every four years if necessary, by the other party, par-ty, which will be none of these things but will still pursue, pur-sue, with new vigor, approximately approxi-mately the same basic policies." poli-cies." Now I can understand why Democrat Jimmy Carter gave away our Panama Canal, to be followed by Republican Re-publican Ronald Reagan, who ran up our national debt. I can understand why Republican George H. W. Bush told us that we are in a New World Order, and why he then ceded his campaign to Democrat Bill Clinton, who then gave away our weapons technology to the Communist Chinese, and gave them the management to the Panama Canal. Now we have Republican George Bush moving to merge our nation with the North American continent, while Democrat Hillary will pretend to rescue us from this fate. And always there seems to be the same outfit in the background subtly and covertly steering us into less freedom and independence. I think the solution is to get the American people as a whole to understand this process before anything can be done. Frank M.
