Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, May 25, 2006 Shurtleff Asks FTC to Look at Alcohol Ads J Impact oriYouth Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and 19 other state attorneys general are asking ask-ing the Federal Trade Commission Com-mission to take a hard look at how alcohol advertising may promote underage drinking. The comments were sent after the FTC asked whether it should collect col-lect information from alcohol alco-hol advertisers about marketing, mar-keting, sales and the alcohol alco-hol industry's self-imposed regulatory codes. We believe the current industry standard overexposes overex-poses youth to alcohol advertising ad-vertising and think this is unacceptable," says Shurtleff. Shurtl-eff. "If you're going to apply ap-ply a standard in order to avoid overexposing youth to alcohol advertising, then that standard should have some real meaning." The 20 attorneys general are all members of the National Na-tional Association of Attorneys Attor-neys General Youth Access to Alcohol Committee. Shurtleff and Main Attorney Attor-ney General Steve Rowe chair the bipartisan committee, com-mittee, which is studying youth access to alcohol issues is-sues and working on ways to stop underage drinking. The most recent research has demonstrated a link between be-tween exposure to alcohol advertising and increased drinking behavior by underage un-derage drinkers. The attorneys general say the FTC should ask alcohol al-cohol advertisers about the amount of money spent and where they spend it. For instance, in-stance, advertisers should explain how much is spent on TV and radio ads compared com-pared to movie product placement or college bar promotions. The alcohol industry in-dustry currently operates under a series or voluntary standards, all of which require re-quire that advertising be placed only when 70 percent per-cent or more of the audience audi-ence is 21 or older.
