A team of six from the school traveled to Chicago to attend the conference and accept the award. There they also gave a presentation on the reading program at Westside. The presentation focused on eleven key components com-ponents of Westside's reading program: quality classroom practices, effective interventions, collaboration, col-laboration, use of data, staff development, resources, re-sources, research, motivation, parent involvement, involve-ment, business partnership and native language development for second language learners. ; Westside's transformation into an exemplary reading school was a journey requiring considerable consider-able time and effort. Six years ago, under new direction, di-rection, an excited faculty undertook to make literacy lit-eracy the focus. The school has changed dramatically, dramati-cally, from the inside out, including a move to a brand new building. From a time when there was no leveled library, Westside's leveled library now rivals any in the State. From individual teachers working in isolation, isola-tion, now they see collaboration amongst professional profes-sional learning communities focused on student progress. Truman on May 8, 1945 as Germany surrendered. Kay Maynard shared the newspaper with us, and it was addressed to C. J. Maynard, 302 E. 300 South. The large color picture on the front of the newspaper shows the arm of the Statue of Liberty holding her torch with flags from all of the countries involved in-volved in the war coming out of the torch. Inside, a page ad from Springville City proclaims, "Well Done, Boys!" It goes on to say, "Uncle Sam gives you a hearty handshake, and hopes you can feel the pressure of millions of other grateful Americans' hands in that grasp. Our pride in you is matched only by our pride in the freedoms for which you so courageously fight. "Your lot has been a deadly bloody battle.. .calling for unsurpassed un-surpassed valor and stamina. The gratitude due you can be seen in the happy faces of the shackled peoples you 'have freed...in the hope you have reborn re-born in the hearts of all liberty-loving liberty-loving men.
