The coaches talked a bit about how their seasons went this year. We were then privileged to have the D'Velles perform a superb routine. But of course, the best was saved for last: The D'Males. They were breathtaking in the fact that it was absolutely hilarious hilari-ous to watch. Now we know what to use to get the school excited for games-senior guys in tights with pretty sparkles on their leotards. Rah rah rah for the traditions we love at SHS. National math test Kim Clark SHS STAFF WRITER On Wednesday, Feb. 16, a group of select students came together to take the annual an-nual National Mathematics Exam. The test is one given to students all over the country coun-try on the same date and at the same time. Many students take the test because it can look impressive im-pressive on a resume, it provides pro-vides excellent practice at taking timed tests, and, if they score high enough, they may continue on to the American Invitational Math Exam. To be able to take the exam, students had to receive re-ceive a special invitation from the Springville High School Math Department. Two tests are given, the AMC-10, which is for sophomores, sopho-mores, and the AMC-12, which is for juniors and seniors. se-niors. The math teachers at the school selected eleven students to take the sophomore sopho-more test, and eleven students stu-dents to take the junior and senior test. In order to reserve their spot for the test, students had to tell Mr. Frossard that they were interested. Students Stu-dents who failed to reserve their spot by Feb. 9 were not allowed to take the test; alternates al-ternates were selected to replace re-place them. Eric Sumsion, a senior at SHS who took the test said, "It was a harder version than the one they gave last year. I take it because it's a lot of fun." Another senior who took the test, Andy Peterson, said, "I took the test to challenge myself mathematically." Though the official results of the test will not come back for another three weeks, students stu-dents who took the test were able to compute their unofficial unoffi-cial scores. www.cars.mart.com Supports the Springville High School RED DEVILS Come see us for the Best Deals on pre-owned cars! But who is this man that drives SHS Orchestra students to such excellence? Mr. Tsugawa (Sam) was originally trained as a trombone trom-bone player in jazz and symphonic sym-phonic groups. He trained and practiced and prepared to be a brass musician. However, an opportunity arose to teach a string orchestra, an opportunity he planed as a temporary means to his eventual band ends. However, as he will tell you himself, things change. Tsugawa has remained a string teacher for a total of 17 years. His extensive career has seen him teaching teach-ing multiple children from the same families. Many of his students have had older siblings who have gone through the program already. The extensive numbers of students being taught by Mr. Tsugawa sometimes results in the inclusion of other family members in the program, including the elite "Orchestra Moms." This group of women (and a few men who proudly claim the title "mom") is a key to Tsugawa's many successes. Tsugawa has an advantage advan-tage over most teachers, as he has the bonus of knowing many of his students from the junior high andor the middle school. He has conducted con-ducted the school orchestras of Springville at many different dif-ferent grade levels. While the high school has been the crucial center point for his conducting, he has also taught at the middle school and (as he currently is now) at the junior high school. t ''V (' . Samuel Tsugawa This creates a teacher-student teacher-student relationship that most teachers have never or will never experience. Students become accustomed accus-tomed to his teaching style and he learns the individual learning style of each student. stu-dent. This is especially impressive considering the large sizes of his classes (30-40 (30-40 students). Samuel Tsugawa has led his students on a journey of excellence. Bringing many young musicians well beyond what their abilities would normally be. As an incredible monument to his years of teaching, he will take this year's generation of musicians to a national competition, an event that is sure to be a hallmark of his incredible career. r.
