Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, February 24, 2005 Utah Valley Symphony Young Artists Concert March 2, 3 Two Springville siblings are among 10 young musicians who will be in the spot-fight spot-fight when the Utah Valley Symphony presents pre-sents its annual Young Artists Concert in the Provo Tabernacle Wednesday and Thursday, Mar. 2 and 3. Under the baton of Bryce Rytting, the 7:30 p.m. concerts will open with Shostakovich's "Festival" Overture. Admission Admis-sion at the door is $5 per person, $15 for a family, and $2 for students in a group. Violinists Joshua and Jossalyn Jensen of Springville, along with violinist Porter Bowcut of Spanish Fork, cellist Catherine Willey and her sister, violinist Rebeka Wil-ley Wil-ley of Pleasant Grove, will perform the first movement of Vivaldi's Concerto in B minor with the orchestra. Their Utah Valley Symphony performance perfor-mance will follow by a few days their performance per-formance for the American String Teachers Teach-ers Association national convention in Reno. Calling themselves the Vivaldi Quintet, Quin-tet, they are coached by the Willey sisters' mother, Denise. The young quintet is unusual in that the Young Artists Concert normally features soloists rather than an ensemble. Other soloists on the program are violinist John Kovalenko, 20, Provo; pianist Mary Mit-ton, Mit-ton, 10, Provo; pianist Jonathan Bowman, 22, Provo; pianist Jonathan Keith, 15, i 'jj''-t Congratulations to the winners of the Design a Flyer for the School Play contest at Art City Elementary. The Grand Prize winner is Emma Black. First place winners are Brooke Lopshire, Maddison Dayton, Samantha Child, Mandi Lopshire and Emily Young. They each won a $5 gift certificate to the Read Leaf Bookstore. Look for their flyers posted post-ed around town. yum ilii""K'lii mrw who'c. am is Sr" iiiitii nn vrinf wiin n itAro EXPERIENCE! This week I'll discuss dis-cuss the use and secondary image capture of transparency transparen-cy film. Kodachrome slide film is one of the best films ever created. cre-ated. In the previous two articles we have discussed how excessive exces-sive pronation and supination can possiblv result in pain in the knees, hips, back and ankles. an-kles. We will discuss further how the type of shoe that is worn can either help or make the symptoms and wear and tear in our joints worse. We will leave most of our discussion of shoes towards athletic shoes. The shoe that you chose needs to encourage the normal nor-mal motion of the foot and not excessive or too little pronation prona-tion of the foot. As discussed previously, pronation is the dropping of the medial (inner) arch of the foot and the slight rolling in of the ankle that occurs oc-curs each time we place weight on the foot. Pronation of the foot is shock absorbing mechanism parency film for natural color and saturatioa There are only a few labs around the world that process Kodachrome film because of toxic chemicals and precautionary handling necessary for the K-14 process. Other slide films (hereafter referred to as transparency trans-parency films) from Kodak, Fuji and other film manufactures manufac-tures perform very well and are easily processed by most photo labs using the E-6 process. Transparency film is available avail-able in a variety of formats, ISO speeds and color temperature tempera-ture ratings. It is an excellent choice to use for secondary digital capture because the color col-or is easily reproduced by most film scanners and the grain, especially in the slower speed films, is extremely fine when exposed and processed properly. After the initial image capture cap-ture and processing of slide film the film can be viewed through a projector, on a light table or it can be scanned for digital use. Most scanners now come with a transparency transparen-cy adapter to allow you to scan your transparencies. The commercial will depict teens performing activities and having fun doing them drug and alcohol free. Jeremy responded to a flyer asking high school students with talents to come and audition audi-tion for the commercial. He plays lead electric guitar and has a band named Lambchop. He passed the audition and was asked to have the band play. Members of the band are: Mike Rivera, also a sophomore sopho-more at SHS, on electric bass; Christian Johns, 13, on drums; Shalem Johns, 8, singer; and Eliza Johns, 10, on keyboards. The band likes to play cover songs to classic rock songs, and they also write their own of the body. Supination is the slight outward roll of the foot with each step and therefore the foot is too rigid. How can you know if your foot pronates the normal amount, excessively, or too little lit-tle (supination)? You could have your foot checked by a chiropractor, or podiatrist. You could also do a simple test at home. (Not always accurate). accu-rate). This test, known as the wet test, is done by wetting the foot and then placing it on some paper for a few seconds to leave your foot print on the paper. A normal foot print will narrow in the middle of the foot to approximately half of the width of the foot. , Too much pronation of the foot will show a print where the middle of the foot only slightly indents. A supinating foot will produce a print that problem with using a flatbed scanner with a transparency adapter is that they don't have the dynamic range of a dedicated dedi-cated film scanner and therefore there-fore can't capture all the detail in your transparency. The advantage ad-vantage to using a flatbed scanner is that they are inexpensive inex-pensive and easy to use. There are many uses for digitally captured transparency transparen-cy images. The most obvious is the venerable slide show. Creating a professional looking look-ing slide show used to be up to professionals using multiple projectors, dissolve units, and audio equipment. Now professional slide shows can be easily created using simple to use software like Microsoft PowerPoint and other presentation software as well as most video editing software. soft-ware. These slideshows can be more than just fancy text and clipart. Your beautiful images photographed on slide film can be incorporated into any presentation once captured digitally. Of course any scanned picture can be inserted insert-ed into a presentation but the advantage of slide film is it's brilliant color and the lack of distortion, grain and "noise". A pronating foot needs a motion control shoe that will give support and limit the amount of rolling in of the foot during each step. Motion control con-trol shoes will have a sole that is relatively straight and contains con-tains a firm section under the inner edge of the foot. A supinating foot needs a shoe that will help cushion some of the shock experience with each step. These shoes will have a sole that indents at the middle of the foot similar , to the print of a foot. , If you have a normal foot a neutral shoe or a stability shoe can be used. These shoes have a sole that is indented at the ration, text and dissolves between be-tween slides in many variations. varia-tions. The slide show can be presented directly from your computer using the monitor or an LCD projector or it can be burned to a DVD to show on any computer or TV. There are of course other uses for digitally captured transparencies. Once saved to CD or DVD you have a digital archive of your transparency. If taken care of, that archive can be accessed any time to have photographic prints made, you can send copies to friends and family, it can be used for computer wallpaper, emailed, inserted into printed presentations or whatever you enjoy doing with your digital files. Be sure to let the sales attendant know the type of shoe that you need so that you can be steered to the correct shoe type. You can compare the amount of stability a shoe will offer by grabbing the front of the shoe sole with one hand and grabbing the rear sole with the other and then by twisting the rear portion of the sole in a opposite direction of the front sole. The resistance resis-tance to the twisting is an indication indi-cation of the ability of the shoe to stabilize the foot from pronation. The other problem prob-lem is spending the time to scan them all. All these issues are easily solved. Bring in your transparencies trans-parencies and we will scan them using high-end film scanners, scan-ners, burn them to CD or DVD and even create a slide show out of them with background music, dissolves, menus and chapters.
