And though Americans have cut back the growth rate in overall oil use, their demand for motor gasoline is up substantially. (Total -estimated petroleum demand for the first three months of 1979 was up 1.7 percent from a year ago, but motor gasoline use was up an estimated 4.5 percent.) This increase in gasoline use comes at a bad time. Members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) have again raised prices, and oil supplies worldwide are tight. And because gasoline accounts for about 40 percent of U. S. Traffic tickets up The Utah Highway Patrol reports a 245 percent increase in arrest citations during the week of April 23 through 29 as result of Governor Matheson's program of enforcing the 55 mph speed limit. Since the Governor's direction to make an all-out all-out effort to enforce the speed limit on April 16, troopers were assigned ten hour work days and were instructed to eliminate the inssuance of warning tickets. The Utah Department of Public Safety also noted that there has been a highly visible show of voluntary compliance with the 55 mile per hour limit. oil consumption, demand must be reduced to avoid 'shortages and to meet a commitment to the International In-ternational Energy Agency to reduce demand for world oil 5 percent below projected fourth quarter 1979 levels. Here are four gasoline -saving tips to help you -and your country - save this essential fuel: l. Share the ride. About one-third of all private automobile use .is for commuting, frequently with only the driver in the car. If only one person were added as a passenger, the two occupants oc-cupants of the car would use about half the gasoline required if each drove alone. It should be easy to ask a, neighbor or a fellow employee to join in riding with you to and from work. More than 20 million commuters now share the ride. Many-employers Many-employers offer incentives in-centives such as free or reduced - rate parkingJor carpools, and the trend towards vanpools is in-crasing. in-crasing. t. ( ombine trips and eliminate unnecessary trips. Plan your trips -- to market, to the library, to school, or to visit friends. You'll find that many neighborhood jaunts could be combined, and you could help your neighbors by offering to run errands for them. Some trips might be better handled - or even eliminated -- by telephoning, writing, or combining with another trip. :. Drive at a moderate speed. DRIVE A Floyd II. McPherson Services were held Monday, May 7, in Springville for Floyd H. McPherson, 78, of 335 E. 300 S., who died of a heart attack Friday, May 4, 1979, at his home. Born Dec. 28, 1900 in Springville to Willard B. and Flora Blackett McPherson, he married Adelia Kindred Dec. 6, 1922 in the Salt Lake Temple. She died in 1974. He was active in the LDS Church, having served in the Sunday School and elders quorum presidencies. ' He was a high priest at the time of his death. Mr. McPherson was employed as an auto mechanic for many years and also worked at U.S. Steel's Geneva Works. He was active in the Springville senior citizens organization. He also was miles per hour. On the highway, where you may need to maintain a higher speed, stay at 55 mph. Most automobiles get about 18 percent better mileage on the highway at 50 than at 65 mph, and 20 percent better mileage at 55 than at 70 mph. You may note that some drivers abuse the speed limit on superhighways, but state police are cracking down on speeders. I. Have you had an t'liuint' tune-up recently? Do you need one? If your engine is hard to start, hesitates, sputters, idles roughly, or the like - you are losing mileage and should check its condition immediately. You may need to clean and adjust spark plugs and ignition points, replacing if necessary; check timing; and replace air and fuel filter elements. How much you will save on gasoline consumption will depend on the condition of your engine and how much you drive in the course of a year, but savings could range up to 12 percent on your gasoline bills.
