Clair Jensen, bobcats cannot be trapped or hunted legally in Utah, except under special provisions where bobcats are harming livestock. A moratorium on bobcat trapping was set in 1976 by the Agriculture Damage Prevention Board, Utah Department of Agriculture. It is an effort to bring bobcat populations to a level where trapping could be allowed without damaging the resource. . This has led to a decline in the bobcat populations to the point where the species is "threatened" in some areas. It is unlawful to possess bobcat hides in Utah. Hides taken in another state may be possessed, providing that an affidavit af-fidavit affirming that the hides were taken legally in that state is obtained. Without enforcement of this provision, some unscrupulous trappers have continued to trap and sell bobcats in Utah, claiming the hides were taken in another state. The Division is concerned con-cerned that trapping for furs remain a valid use of wildlife. The pressure by trappers on bobcats requires that some regulation be applied to that species to insure its-future. its-future.
