When colonial officers were sent to far away lands to broaden the empire of the British crown they took with them as much of their civilization as they could in their sea chests. These chests had to be simple, sim-ple, compact - durable, and functional and of course sturdy to withstand the rigors of ocean travel in the small confines of the ships of that era.
