Show November 11, 1976 - The Springville Herald Page Eleven mm -By Sean Francis The chance for a State championship in high school football this year was killed last Thursday, when the Davis Darts, upended the Devils, 3(H). It wasnt a good showing for the team, as the score should indicate. Before the game, the Devils had been rated first in the state in their class. Springville kicked off, and Davis went right to work. Kelly Beckstrom, Jeff Webster, Bob Payne, and Jim Hess ripped up huge gains, and drove down to Springville's 5. Beckstrom scored from the 5, the kick failed, and the Darts led 6-0.. Springville next took over on their own 13. They couldnt get moving , and were forced to punt . The Devils got a good break here, as when punting, Scott Phillips was roughed, and they had a first down on the 35. Kyle Elder and Jeff Osborn both made good gains, but the Devils stalled at the Davis 34, and again Springville had to punt. The kick was downed at the 7 of Davis, and it looked like the Devils had the Darts in a hole. They didn't think so though, as they quickly moved out to the 42 on a great run by quarterback Jim Hess. Davis then threw their first pass of the day, and Payne made the See me E. DEAN BRIAN zvo o. The Darts pounded to the Devil's one, but after a personal foul on a Davis player, the Darts had to be content with a. field goal, which was a 23-y'arder. 23-y'arder. The score was now 9-0 with 7:25 left in the second quarter.' Springville seemed to awaken on their next series, as they drove to the Davis 14, with a big gain coming on a Phillips run. Here the Devils met with their first frustrating turnover, when Phillips threw into the end zone in the direction of Osborn, and it i was intercepted. Although the Devils moved the ball fairly well throughout the game, turnovers such as this stopped them from scoring, and played a big part in the game. Neither team scored in the remainder of the second quarter, so the Darts took a 9-0 lead at halftime. The Devils started off well in the second half, as Chris Mecham, Kyle Elder, and Jeff Osborn made beautiful runs through spacious holes in the line of Don Aldredge, Steve Nielson, John Manwaring, Richard Vincent, and Sheldon Anderson. The Devils moved down to the Davis 22 but another interception by Jim Hess cost the Devils a possible touchdown. Hess showed he could play offense of-fense also, as he ran for 50 yards and a first down at Springville's 23. The Darts used the halfback pass for the second time, and this time it went for a touchdown. touch-down. Davis tried for two, and were successful as a double reverse put it in. With 5:03 left in the 3rd quarter, it was 17-0. The fourth quarter belonged entirely to the Darts, as Springville only put on one more serious drive, which was thwarted th-warted when Osborn came up short on a fourth and 4 situation from the Davis 25. Bob Payne and backup quarterback Pat Benton added the final glory for the Darts, scoring from 49 and 1 yards. It was a very disappointing loss for the team, and it was the third straight year the Devils have lost in the semi-finals. They finished the year with an overall record of 8 wins and 2 losses.
