By Sean Francis The Springville Red Devils, led by outstanding offensive line play and great running, soundly defeated the defending Region Six champions, American Fork, Friday afternoon, 29-7. The line, led by the front four of Richard Vincent, Don Aldredge, John Manwaring and Sheldon Anderson, played perhaps the finest game of their lives on offense, as they opened huge holes for the backs. It seems that the only people that ever get recognition for their accomplishments are the running backs, mainly because they carry the ball. But without the blockin, the backs would have a tough time gaining yardage. Kyle Elder, standing only 5 foot 9 and weighing just 150 pounds, may be considered small for a fullback, but what he may lack in stature, he more than makes up with great determination. Kyle showed this when on Springville's first drive he fumbled on the opponent's one yard line with A.F. recovering. He didnt't get discouraged however, and on A.F.'s first series, he broke through the line from his lineback spot and brought down their quarterback behind the goal line for a safety, putting the Devils on the scoreboard for the first time. Kyle finished the game with 108 yards rushing on only 13 carries, an average of over 8 yards a carry, many of these coming on extra effort alone. The game started grimly for the Devils as American Fork marched from their own 43 yard line 57 yards for the score of the game, with Tod Cooper going over from the 1. Springville dominated the game from then on however, holding a lead of 16 to 7 at the half. Chris Mecham, the fine tailback in his junior year, also played an outstanding game, gaining 74 yards on 9 carries, with one touchdown. . Scott Phillips, thought by many to be the best quarterback in the state, also played well, as he ran for two touchdown's and ' -" V ' hi -" t,,,iiiiIMI., - ! ,' '' " ' jWU'lli i 'hi T illBHItn -,1 Saturday, September 18, is a red letter day on any upland game hunter's calendar. On that day, six of Utah's 12 upland game species become legal game. All of the following seasons start on the 18th of September: chukar, Hungarian partridge, grouse, cottontail, snowshoe1 hare and fall turkey. Pheasant and quail seasons, the only upland game seasons to played a fine defensive game. ' Altogether it was a team effort, ef-fort, and the Devils looked like the team to beat in Region Six this year. The team will be idle this week, but will be readying themselves for what could be a tough game' against Spanish Fork next week.
