Sponsored by " Nebo School Pistrict under the adult education program, 12 women and eight girls, including some mother-daughter teams, earned "certificates of completion. The class was taught by Springville police sergeant JD Dalton and Blaine Dalton, Asian karate expert.. The program included a number of films on self defense, exercise sessions and hand-to-hand combat. When the class began, Sgt. Dalton said, the younger girls could scarcely keep up the exercise pace for 10 minutes. But by the end of the course, even the youngest and most frail could "throw" any person there, including Officer Dalton. The class was initiated because of the rate of molest cases in Utah County. Both Nebo District and the Springville Police Department, Officer Dalton added, recognized the necessity for teaching the program. Becuase of popular demand, the class will be held again at a time to be announced. In outlining a preventive plan to follow, Officer Dalton told his students to keep a whistle near the telephone and in the event of a prank or leud call, blow the whistle shrilly into the receiver. If another car is detected following yours, Officer Dalton suggests driving your car tinder the lighted canopy at the nearest police station. According to the text for the class, crime in the 1960's increased in-creased 176 per. cent while population grew only 13 per cent. PERSONAL Why won't mom get married? By PAT and MARILYN DAVIS Dear Pat and Marilyn: ' Why won't my mother get married? My father passed away several years ago and Mom is now living with another an-other man. She is 55 and should realize how embarrassing this is for her children not to mention three grandchildren. I've told her that we disapprove but nothing changed so I spoke with Jack (not his real name ) and asked why he and Mom didn't marry. Incidentally, he is a nice person and we all like him. Jack said he preferred pre-ferred to get married but that he had been unable to convince con-vince my mother. He promised prom-ised to try again and I'm sure he did. While Mom remains happily hap-pily single, everyone else is miserable. Have you ever heard of such a situation? The Children Dear The Children: YES every day from The Parents. Dear Pat and Marilyn: My boyfriend and I have been seeing each other for six months. We want to get married mar-ried after we finish this year COUNTRY COTTONS Country-style bedroom has relaxed Americana style, decorated with pure cotton muslin from AMERICAN BLEACHED GOODS. il iff ii m ATTACHE CASES 20 OFF Except Samsonite Utah Office Supply Springville, Provo, Orem self defense high school And "it could happen to you." The pamphlet pointed out that since neighbors and passers-by often show lack of interest and since police are overloaded and can't always be 'there to help you, it is plainly evident that "you are your own best ..protection." , . ' In addition to tips for self-protection self-protection at home, while walking, and while driving, the course taught what action to take in the event of attack. Whatever happens, the pamphlet concludes, report the police immediately and cooperate with them fully and press charges when the attacker is caught. In summary, three main points are given in protecting self from attackers or would-be offenders; 1. Being suspicious "always on the lookout for suspicious characters, dangerous situations." 2. Being discreet "avoiding flamboyant dress or actions and not showing large sums of money or discussing valuables in public." IJ. Reporting to police "all crimes, attempted crimes and suspected crimes." We are mature . and responsible, not a couple of silly kids. I do not want to go against my father's wishes but I love this boy. What alternatives al-ternatives do we have? Ron and Sue Dear Ron'and Sue: You may be mature for high school seniors, but you do need some time to think. Try college for a year. Then determine if you can add the responsibilities of a marriage on top of your educational obligations. One year at a college col-lege or university may change your mind. Dear Pat and Marilyn: My problem is one that plagues many dumb girls. For. two years I dated a married mar-ried man who was always on the verge of a divorce. He told me the standard lines. His wife was a wife in name only, and they were only living under un-der the same roof because of the children. He said that his wife was a screaming shrew who couldn't possibly get along with anyone. Purely by accident, I met her. She is a lovely lady and a brand new mother. How could I have been so gullible? How could this man lie to me so? I feel hurt and humiliated. humili-ated. Miserable Dear Miserable: You believed what this Romeo told you because you heard what you wanted to hear. As a football player's mother, I never know what type of meal is best to serve before a game. For example, is a steak dinner good pre-game fare for my son? A. Although meat is an important im-portant source of protein for muscle building, a big steak is too heavy for a pre-game meal. Emotional stress and nervous tension may lead to the "butterflies "butter-flies in the stomach" feeling that is aggravated by a big meal before the game. It is best to serve a relatively light meal about 3 to 4 hours before competition. This can include in-clude a small serving of lean meat or poultry, a glass of skim milk, a small potato or serving of pasta and fruit or juice. In this type of meal, the major energy en-ergy sources are carbohydrate foods. Although fat is an important part of everyday meals and a concentrated source of energy, it takes longer to digest fat than carbohydrate, and any slowdown slow-down in the emptying time of the stomach may mean discomfort discom-fort during the game. In planning a pre-game meal for an athlete, I suggest that you count on over half the calories cal-ories coming from carbohydrates, carbohy-drates, that is, starches and sugars. sug-ars. Good sources of carbohydrates carbohy-drates are bread, rice, noodles, macaroni, potatoes, jams, Jerry Suggests: Buy Now for STORAGE PROJECTS during Rexall's 2 for 1 Sale! '. , HERE'S HOW ' Hardwood floors can be restored By GENE GARY Q. We have fine hardwood floors that are discolored with age and water spotted. What is the best way of restoring re-storing them? Mrs. Samuel S. A. Hardwood floors which have become unsightly from abuse, wear or neglect can be restored to their original beauty. Machine sanding removes re-moves the old finish and exposes ex-poses the new wood. With the application of a finishing material, ma-terial, floors are like new syrups, plain cakes and cookies. I dropped and broke a gallon of punch concentrate in the entry leading lead-ing to the living room. We have tried all the commercially commer-cially advertised vacuum-type vacuum-type carpet cleaners. And, repeatedly one week later the spot, which is 36 by 36 inches, reappears. Since it is in the entry, it is constantly walked on, dirty and all. If you have any suggestions in removing or diminishing the spot, we would enjoy reading about it. Mrs. Richard A.K. A. In your case, I would strongly advise consulting a professional carpet cleaner. Removing stains that have been in for sometime is very difficult, and often impossible to remove. However, here is another suggestion for removal re-moval of difficult stains. The Carpet Institute recommends a neutral synthetic detergent in warm, water to a quart, of which is added one-half cup of white vinegar. Shampoo the spot with this mixture, using a stiff hand brush. Another old formula is made of four ounces of common salt to a quart of water, to which is added one-half ounce of formic for-mic acid. Scrub the spot with this mixture and, as in all cases of spot removal, begin at the outer edges and work toward the middle to prevent the spreading of the stain.
