Show Page Fourteen The Springville Herald February 17, 1972 Devils win 70-63 over Grovers; play AF tonight, Dons Wednesday Springville's Red Devils will be shooting for one of their best cage records in recent years, though not in contention for a regional title nor tourney berth, when they finish their schedule in the next two weeks. They will meet the American Fork Cavemen in a return match this evening on the Caveman floor and will then entertain the Spanish Fork Dons here Wednesday, Wed-nesday, February 23 and then finish their schedule Tuesday, February 29 at Provo against the league leading Bulldogs. Win over Vikings In a game that resembled the razzle dazzle of a beginning season contest, the Red Devils emerged from a near ambush and sizzled the nets in a desperation finish that gave them a 70-63 victory here Tuesday night over Pleasant Grove. Craig Pabst, Springville's outstanding scorer, led the Devils in the first quarter with a 13 point performance to keep them in the contest after the Red Devils blew a 7-point margin with 2:26 to go to the quarter. The Grovers added 8 straight points to close the gap to 23-22 with a last second shot at the quarter mark. The Devils played ragged ball during the second quarter and turnovers and fouls allowed the visitors to outscore them 12-11 for a 34-34 halftime score. His hustle and enthusiasm added materially to the Devil's play despite their lopsided contest which went to the Tigers. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. LaVar Davies. Springville will play host to Zone 23 basketball tournament scheduled in two gyms, Springville High School and middle school starting Tuesday, February 22 announces Gordon Smith, supervisor. The double elimination Tournament will be run off on February 22, 24, 25 and conclude Saturday, February 26 in the high school gym. Tournament committeement include Gordon Smith and Mrs. Smith, Marion Davis, Genola; Lee Evans, Springville; Jerry Rowan and Arland Olsen, Provo. Tickets are available through tourney teams or may be had at the door each session of the tournament. Trophies will be presented to 1st, 2nd, consolation quarter, thanks to timely foul shots also by Hall, Cooksey and Davies, who was not having a good night. The Vikings counted heavily from the foul line to keep in the running. In the final period the visitors were within a basket and tied the game at 53 all before Jensen connected on one of several longer shots to give the Devils a 57-55 advantage and continued to lead throughout the remainder of the game. Cooksey played a cool game and his four straight foul shots kept the Devils ahead in the critical last few minutes. Springville, while erratic in their ball handling and sometimes off balance on the defensive backboard, played with determination. They scored 25 field goals to 19 for PG but the losers connected for 25 out of 33 at the foul line as compared to 20. out of 27 for the Devils. Pabst kept his regional individual in-dividual scoring at topmast with 23 points while Chris Jensen had one of his best offensive nights hitting 18 for the Devils. Hansen came up with 10. Quarter scores Springville 23 34 51 70 Pleasant Grove 22 34 48 63 Orem triumphs Last Friday night the Red Devils , while playing courageously against great odds, went down to the towering Tigers of Orem 85-56. Orem took an early lead and were really never threatened from the end of the first quarter on. Playing top ball for the Devils was Craig Pabst who counted half of the points for Springville with 28 and Roger Davies who came up with 11. Five Orem players hit in double figures. winner and awards to the outstanding individual players. The annual Zone 23 M Men tournament will be held starting February 29 in the Spanish Fork and Springville High Schools' gyms, Mr. Smith stated. BYU meets Utah in tests this week BYU basketball, gymnasts and swimming athletes will see action this week on the home front with events in all three Second 9 holes at HC course now being bid Springville City is calling for bids for the constructing of an additional 9-holes to the present golf course at beautiful Hobble Creek Canyon golf course. Plans and specifications are on file in the city engineer's office. Bids will be opened March 6 at the City Council chambers at 7 p.m. A pre-bid meeting will be held February 24 at 1 p.m. at the Springville Golf Course Club House. . With the addition of nine more holes, the Hobble Creek Golf Course will provide play for many additional golfers and will be one of the most spectacular golf cburses in the country. Sundance hosts ski races this weekend This weekend Sundance ski resort will be hosting one of the largest ski races for beginning and second year students in the state. The program is part of the final instruction for recreation students from the southern part of the county. The young racers will be competing for trophies in a short slalom run starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. The program includes young skiers from Payson, Spanish Fork, and Springville. Saturday's lesson will concentrate con-centrate on running gates on the slalom course, which requires proficiencies in skill areas learned during the seven weeks of instruction. Students will compete against the clock with awards being presented to the top students in each class. Over 100 trophies will be awarded to the county participants. par-ticipants. The two university's freshmen teams will play a preliminary to the main game starting at 1:15. BYU's Kittens are currently 5-6 for the season while the Papooses are 5-9 to date. BYU Cougars split their Arizona jaunt last week for the first loss in WAC play defeating Arizona 86-78 Friday and losing to Arizona State Saturday 99-95 Swimming Meet Entering the final week of competition before the WAC championships, the BYU swimming team will host Utah Friday at 8 p.m. in the BYU Natatorium. The Utes hold the edge to date having won two from the Y swimmers previously. Gymnast meet Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 the BYU gymnastic team will compete against Utah in the Smith Fieldhouse. WAC track, field meet planned The Western Athletic Conference, Con-ference, which has produced its share of track and field greats, will hold an Olympic meet of its own this weekend in Salt Lake City on Feb. 18-19. The occasion will be the third annual WAC indoor track and field meet scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights on the boards of the Salt Palace.
