IET THE PEOPLE KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE COUNTRY S SAFE, RESPONSIBILITY IN GOVERNMENT It has been said that the difference between a politician and a statesman is one hundred years. This becomes more ev ident as we begin to hear the rhetoric of a national election elec-tion year. It takes real statesmanship to speak out for or against issues which might adversely affect a candidate's reception at the polls. Two of our great Presidents, whose birthdays we celebrate cele-brate this month, had the courage to speak their true convictions. George Washington aptly expressed his feelings when he said, "Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pain to bring it to light." And Abraham Lincoln showed confidence in the fair judgment of the electorate when he said, "I have faith in the people... the danger is in their being misled. Let them know the truth and the country is safe." These comments are especially appropriate in this election elec-tion year. From the superintendent's desk U. S. Commissioner of Education, Sidney Marland calls vocational training the No. 1 priority in education today. A recent survey by the Department Depart-ment of Labor indicates that by 1980 about 80 percent of all jobs will require less than a bachelor's degree, although very few will be available to the unskilled. During the 1970's the greatest demand for employees will be in areas of service workers, professional and technical workers, and clerical & sales workers. "The old saying.'you have to go to college to earn a decent living,' becomes a myth as we note that construction workers, electricians, and bricklayers are earning $8.00 to $10.00 an hour across the country and working to capacity." Robert L. Ewigleben, President of Ferris State College, in Michigan, says, "Colleges should be training more auto mechanics and fewer English literature majors ... I think there is nothing more tragic in education than turning out students who understand all about their culture but nothing about making a living." "We must change our attitudes. at-titudes. We must purge ourselves our-selves of academic snobbery. How absurd to say general knowledge is superior to useful knowledge. Every high school graduate should be ready for a job or be ready to enter higher training," states Marland. Nebo School District is facing p s Dr. Joe A. Reidhead 1 the crossroads in Vocational Education. We believe that a very high priority should be placed on vocational education in order to meet the growing need for skilled employees. But the facilities and equipment now available are used to the maximum. Several programs, for lack of facilities, are currently being operated in local , businesses, using their equipment equip-ment and facilities. This program necessitates students attending school at night. Should we continue on as at present with overloaded shops and no school facilities at all in such areas as auto mechanics, machine shop, electronics, graphics, etc." Or, should we build on to each high school, making each more comprehensive, com-prehensive, to accomodate these programs and fulfill the needs of the students? Or, should we build a "Skills Center" on "neutral ground" for all vocational students in the district? Or, should we join with . Provo and Alpine School Districts to purchase the Utah Trade & Technical Institute buildings in Provo when the school moves to its new location in Orem? These are far-reaching decisions which must be made in the near future. If we believe in vocational education, we must provide the essential facilities, supplies, and equipment to meet the training needs of the students enrolled in our district. We invite you to visit the vocational departments in our schools and observe the fine work going on even though we are limited by available facilities. Please feel free to call or visit if you have questions or suggestions. If you belong to a club or group that would like more information on vocational education, we would be happy to provide a speaker to provide information and answer questions. 1 US 100 TABLETS FREE VITA-KAPS MULTIVITAMINS Dietary supplement.
