He went on to point out that "either we stop poisoning our air or we will become a nation in gas masks groping our way through dying cities and a wilderness of ghost towns." Airpollution is a critical problem and it will get worse unless each individual takes action to stop it. By 1975, it is estimated, a majority of the world's population will live in urban environments. It is further fur-ther anticipated that about three-fourths of our Americans will be lving in about 10 percent of our total land area. The prospects for future survival seem dim in view of that fact that right now because of air pollution our urban areas receive about 16 percent less sunlight than they did in 1920. But this need not be the case. There is much each person can do to fight air pollution according ac-cording to the American Association of Nurserymen, who have outlined a program named "Green Survival" calling for individual action. We can curtail the burning of trash for example. Each year we generate about 160 million tons of waste in this country. About half of that goes up in flames, adding over a ton of pollutants Pupfish saved at Devil's Hole such as dust, grit, cinders and various poisons to our air. Don't burn leaves, the nurserymen nur-serymen caution. Start a compost pile or spread leaves over the floor of a wooded area where their nutrients can be recycled by natural decom-potion. decom-potion. Precautions to ice fishermen Ice fishing is attracting more anglers every winter in Utah. Advocates of the sport gather at such popular fishing spots as Flaming Gorge, Willard Bay, Mantua Reservoir and Utah Lake Growing popularity , of ice fishing prompts a precaution from the Division of Wildlife Resources. Anglers should cut only small holes in the ice and mark them when they leave. Bathtub size holes in the ice, frozen over with thin ice and covered by light snow, can be a death trap for unknowing fishermen. Ice strength varies according to conditions. Slush ice is about half as strong as clear blue ice. New ice is stronger than old ice, and continuous travel over the same route will weaken ice. Two inches of blue ice will support one man on foot. Three inches will support a group of men walking single file. Eight inches of good ice should support a large automobile. Devil's Hole Pupfish now have a better chance of survival after efforts of a concerned zoologist and the National Wildlife Federation to protect their water supply. Surviving in a small pool left over from the ice age, the entire world's population of Devil's Hole Pupfish had adapted to life in . the highly salty water of Death Valley. The existence of the small pupfish, a rare and endangered species, was threatened as excessive amounts of ground water were being pumped from a portion of Death Valley National Monument. ' A study by the zoologist, assisted by the Federation, prompted the Department of Interior to file suit for an injunction in-junction against a pumping corporation. Settling' out of court, the corporation shut down certain wells responsible for the falling water level of the area. A friend of ours has two teenage teen-age daughters. One, after a rather late party the night before, had been ordered to bed early. Sure enough the phone rang and her sister answered. It was the sleeping beauty's heavy date. Next morning at , breakfast there was quite a little scene. "You surely didn't tell him I had gone to bed!" wailed the sleeper. "Of course I did." "That's the meanest thing I ever heard of in my life! Everybody will think I have to go to bed at 9 o'clock just like a child!" "That's all right." was the comforting reply. "I told him you had an awful hangover." ' Three man teams from VA, Dept. of Labor and Office of Education are conducting a wide-ranging counseling program on government benefits for servicemen and women in Vietnam, Japan, Korea, and Europe. |
