A total of 434 Eagle award winners will be honored Thursday at the 16th annual banquet at the Wilkinson Center on the BYU campus. Eagle Recognition Banquet set this evening, Wilkinson Center Achievement and the value of hard work is the theme of a speech tonight January 27, at the Eagle Recognition Banquet, Brigham Young University by President Dallin H. Oaks who has been selected to address a record 434 boys who have earned their Eagle Awards during 1971. The annual Banquet will be held in the Ernest L. Wilkinson Center Ballroom on the B. Y. U. Campus beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Eagles hosted by men who are in a profession or vocation of special interest to the young men. Eagle winners being honored include those from Utah County, Wasatch County, Millard County, Sanpete County and Juab County. Merrell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rondo Merrell, 144 South 400 East, Payson. Dr. Oaks, himself an Eagle Scout and one of the youngest major University Presidents in the United States, grew up in Provo and graduated from B. Y. High School and Brigham Young University before earning his law degree at the University of Chicago. At age 14 he was the youngest person at that time to have a commercial radio license and was well-known in the Utah area as sports announcer and disc jockey for a Provo radio station. The native Provoan took over duties as president of B. Y. U. on August 1 when former president Ernest L. Wilkinson began duties organizing the establishment establish-ment of a law school at B.Y.U. President Oaks' 14-year-old son Lloyd will also attend the banquet because he finished his Eagle requirements since moving from Chicago. The banquet is sponsored by the Utah National Parks Council which leads the nation in percentage per-centage of boys receiving their Eagle Awards as well as percentage per-centage of boys enrolled in the Scout Program. (26,411 in 1971). Senior 'Student of the Week' Steven Averett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Averett, is "Senior of the Week". Steve is a creative boy and his sense of humor and helpful attitude make him a well-liked student at SHS. Steve is very active in speech and drama at SpringviHe High. He was chosen to represent SHS in the state radio broadcasting competition. He participates on the debate team. He belongs to the NFL Club and to the U.N. Club where he was chosen this year's president. Steve has participated in many assemblies and also has written several. Steve's hobbies include hiking, playing the guitar, and writing. His writing takes the form of stories, poems, and assemblies. Each exhibit the humor and the creative mind he is so well-known well-known for at SHS. Steve is also an active member of the L.D.S. Church. He is serving as president of his class. He has four individual awards and is an Eagle Scout.
