With both teams plugging up the key Chris Jensen of Springville hit from the outside to make the difference by pouring in 18 of his 19 points over the tight Payson defense. Other than Jensen's hot hands, the game was evenly matched with the Devils committing eight fouls to only six Lion fouls. Payson was guilty of 15 turnovers tur-novers to 13 Springville errors.' Craig Pabst was a consistent scorer for the Devils hitting 16 counters evenly distributed throughout the game. High scorer for the Lions was speedy guard Dan Sudweeks leading his teammates with 12 points. Jensen Starts Early Taking the opening tip off, Jensen converted from the top of the key to start the first quarter ping-pong match. Jerry Buys of Payson broke loose in a fast break passed to Kim Montegue scoring the first Lion bucket but quickly Mike Hansen countered for the Devils retaining the Springville lead. After a flurry of offensive mistakes, the Devils ended the first quarter on the bottom end of a 9-12 score. Jensen started off the second quarter with two quick radar goals from 20 feet to regain the Devil lead with Pabst adding two more. Putting the Lions ahead again, Sudweeks hit for two nets capitalizing on a Devil turnover. Three Lion mistakes gave Springville 21-18 lead. The Devils lengthened their lead at half time to 27-21. Devil center, Hansen increased in-creased the Devil lead with a tip in followed by a string of three goals by Jensen, Dennis Giles and Bart Brown giving the Devils an insurmountable lead. Neither Can Score With the score 35-23, both teams went into a stalemate neither team able to convert. After three minutes of missed shots and turnovers, Buys finally broke the jinx with a 20-footer 20-footer followed by Sudweeks bringing the score within eight at 35-27.
