Given the facts showing the incomparable advantages of American capitalism and constitutional government, the youth generation of the 1970 decade would never buy the phony slogans and propaganda falsehoods of the radicals, the revolutionaries, or any other force seeking to contaminate the minds of our young. So, as I see it, the first responsibility of American parents and our American school system today is that of teaching our young people the exciting true facts of American history and the incomparable in-comparable human progress that has been made possible within our system of freedom. Have we fulfilled this responsibility in the America of today? As a teacher, college president, journalist, and parent, I must say we have missed the boat somewhere along the line. No great majority of our young people are rejecting our system, totally. But according to studies made by reputable organizations, the majority of our youth do not clearly understand un-derstand our system. Thus, the studies and polls show, a majority nationwide reject some of the keystones in the structure of the American way of life. For instance, a majority believes that the major industries in-dustries of America should be taken over and operated by the Government. Only a small per cent openly advocate Socialism yet most would seem not to realize that Government ownership is the keystone of a Socialist system. Without Understanding ' Many students also reject other basic principles of our American system and embrace other principles of Socialism without really understanding either system. Those teachers and college instructors who have wanted to teach objectively ob-jectively the true facts about our history, economics, and government, have for many years been working in a climate in which Left-wing, or radical firopaganda has made it dif-icult dif-icult indeed. During major demonstrations on college campuses and in the streets, I have witnessed hundreds of thousands of young Americans listening with rapt attention while the firey speakers for Socialism-Communism Socialism-Communism have incited them against the American system. In this we are failing in our homes and schools and communications media. We must change this or lose our nation by default. Textbook: "Capitalism Stinks!" The propagandists have not been idle in the classrooms. They have succeeded in getting many textbooks contaminated with biased information detrimental to the American system and advantageous to the Socialist system. Some of these books have made "capitalism" a dirty word. I have just finished examining a college textbook used in I don't know how many colleges and universities (the publisher hasn't answered my letter). The very first sentence says: "Capitalism stinks!" The second sentence says: "Capitalism is a highly destructive, wasteful, exploitative ex-ploitative and irrational way to organize the resources of a society like ours." This wouldn't be so bad if youngsters subjected to the book were well informed on the facts about capitalism and socialism. Or if the instructors provided a "rebuttal book," I wonder in how many cases this is done? I also recently have examined another textbook. This one is entitled: "This Is My Country." It is for Junior High American history classes. It is one of the most beautiful textbooks and one of the most honest in its presentation of historical facts about America, that I have seen in my 40 years as an educator. We will review it later. 1 In our column next week we will review "Up Against the American Myth," the textbook which condemns American capitalism and agitates for socialist revolution. A student in a history course at North Carolina State University was shocked when the book was assigned in the course. He withdrew with-drew from the course. Neither North Carolina State University nor the publishers of the book have answered my letters of inquiry. When some Arizona parents became disturbed over some of the social studies textbooks being used in the public schools, Education Commissioner Weldon Shofstall got busy. He set up a Commission to examine all social science textbooks. What the Commission, and Commissioner Shofstall, found caused him to say publicly: "Certain forces are trying to involve our schools in an atheistic revolution which threatens to destroy our country and turn American civilization into barbarism." " All of us need to work with school authorities to see that the knowledge sought by our youth includes the true and exciting facts about our incomparable American system. $ IttT?
