Nine doctors, 12 nurses and a variety of other persons all volunteered their services for the day-long clinic-the first ever held in Utah County. The checkups included breast and uterine examinations, including Pap smear tests. The clinic was part of the Cancer Society's Virginia Whitney Memorial Project which has conducted similar programs in other areas of the state reaching a total of 6,704 women who have been examined. Examinations concentrated on the search for signs of breast and uterine cancer because they are the most frequent forms of malignancy to afflict Utah women and because they can be successfully treated if discovered in the early stages. Among the thousands of women examined in previous clinics, about one percent were found to have some form of previously unsuspected , malignancy-a discovery which has saved a number of lives. Nine volunteer doctors at the Payson Clinic were under the direction of Dr. Wells Brock-bank, Brock-bank, Payson. The Payson Hospital was used through the cooperation of Harold Farmer, hospital administrator, and nurses, hospital staff and maintenance crews also assisted in the clinic. In addition to the doctors and nurses, eight candy stripers also helped conduct the clinic as well as eight technicians from the Salt Lake Specialized Training Institute under the direction of Marlene Tibbetts. Women attending the clinic were registered, shown cancer education films and questioned about any personal symptoms, including the seven warning signals" which may indicate the presence of cancer. Glen Tuckett, president of the board of directors, Utah County Unit of the Cancer Society, explained about the clinics and their past success. The women were then examined by the volunteer doctors and nurses. Results of ' the examinations and Pap smears are then turned over to the woman's own private family physician. Family doctors are notified immediately when symptoms indicate a follow-up is I af"! get off to a good start with our Junior Protector life policy. Call me today. E.
