Show Snow continues on weather scene for week Recurring periods of snow continued to plague the in-termountain in-termountain area during this past week. The accumulated moisture from these storms ranged from 1.72 inches at Ogden Pioneer plant and 1.10 inches at Morgan down to little or none at a few stations in the Southeastern section of the State. Since September when the snowfall season began this year, both Salt Lake City Airport and the Station at Logan USU have accumulated the greatest snowfall so early in the season. The Salt Lake Airport has recorded a total of 38.1 inches and the Station at Utah State University 30.2 inches as of Monday morning. Temperatures during the past week continued well below normal making this the 4th week in a row during which average temperatures were below average. During this past week averages ranged from 4 to 17 degrees below normal and nearly one half the reporting stations recorded sub-zero minimums during the period. The coldest minimums during the week was 21 degrees below zero at both Woodruff and Schofield. The next coldest minimum was 19 degrees below zero at Trenton in Northern Cache Valley. To further increase the discomfort of residents of the state several periods of strong winds were reported which closed many country roads and even a few major highways temporarily with drifting snow, and caused water freezing problems on farms and ranches. Other Red Devil players include Brett Gledhill (41), Jim Hall (33), Robert Gardner (11), and Mike for several months many home owners begin to consider replacing their lawn areas with artificial turf asphalt. Dr. Elwynn Taylor made a check on the relative temperature of these three surfaces and found lawn grass absorbs 78 percent of the incoming solar radiation, asphalt 87 percent and artificial turf 92.7 percent. What do these figures mean in terms of human comfort. On a day in early October Oc-tober Dr. Taylor measured the temperatures of these surfaces under Saint Louis sunlight and found that with an air temperature tem-perature of 90 degrees the temperature of the grass was 100 degrees, the asphalt 140 degrees and the artificial turf 162 degrees F. Imagine the discomfort of football players playing on artificial turf. It was even hotter than asphalt. These same temperatures would be reflected in the comfort of a person's home. Plants are 1 of nature's most effective dust traps. The hairy leaf surfaces clutch falling particles from the air and hold them, thereby keeping solid matter out of our atmosphere. When it rains, the particles are washed to the ground. So effective ef-fective are trees as dust catchers cat-chers that one of our major cities, Los Angeles, has to wash its trees periodically in a detergent solution. In another area, the dust count on a sheltered side of a planted section was 75 percent lower than a similar count on the windward side. Trees help keep our air clean. Springville's Red Devils ended their pre-season basketball play Tuesday night with a triumphant victory over the Davis High School quintet 68-58 in a game played here. The win somewhat overshadowed over-shadowed two losses suffered during the past week by Coach Elliott Jordan's five as the team played with a determined effort in the Davis win. " It was a new and determined team Tuesday night that put a full game together to win the contest here. Only once were the Darts ahead of the Devils and that was the first foul pitch of the contest. From there on after the Devils tied it with a foul pitch themselves, the Springville club held the lead throughout the entire contest although it got as close as one point in the third quarter. Led by the outstanding plav of Craig Pabst, top scorer for the Devils, the entire team played much improved ball and drove hard throughout the contest. Defensively, the Devils played well and only through some outside shooting and many foul shots were the Darts able to keep in the contest. Pabst, who sat out most of the second half with four personals, sparked the Devils in the final half of the last quarter as he came back in and ran the victory margin to 10 with the help of Hansen, Gardner, Cooksey, Davies, Gledhill, Brown who played good ball throughout the contest. Quarter scores Springville 18 34 43 68 Davis 15. 31 39 58 Devils lose Disatrous weather conditions combined with a turbulent game at Grantsville left much to be desired for both the weather and the Red Devil play as they were snowed under 76-46 last Thursday. Thur-sday. The home team had 40 foul tries compared to the Devil's 15. This was not necessaryily the whole story, but the demoralized Red Devils seemed to do everything wrong. Craig Pabst hit 14 for the losers. The Devils entertained Manti here Saturday night and exhibited two brands of ball in losing the contest 49-46. The first half they were flat and down as much as 18 points. The second half they played a reversal to the first half and came within a basket of winning. They tied the game up with 30 seconds to play before losing the last three points. Pabst hit 18 for Springville.
