Mr. Nielson, whose life spans the entire era from the pioneer days to the jet plane and space age, was born July 28, 1881 in Fountain Green, the son of Anthon and Maria Beck Nielson - The family actually resided in the new town of Huntington, but because of no doctors, the Nielsons had gone into Fountain Green for the new arrival. His early life was that typical of pioneering days. The Nielson 's first home in Huntington Hun-tington was that of a dugout in the side of a hill which they lived in until a small two-room log cabin was built. Because of the success of relatives in central Colorado, the Nielsons moved to San Luis Valley in April of 1885. They .had two wagons and two teams of horses. It took them 3 months to make the trip 475 miles. From Sariford, Colorado the family moved to a ranch in LaJara, Colorado where Loren began his first work on the farm of harrowing with a pair of stubborn mules. ; The schoolhouse was only a mile and a half from this ranch which he attended three months of the year. Because of his father's poor health, Loren often missed school to work on the farm.. When he was 20 he came to the Brigham Young Academy. He attended school two years and then became a teacher in a little town of Eastdale, Colorado for $40 per month. He returned to school in Logan and took shop work and after two years there, he taught woodwork and mathematics at the San Luis Stake Academy at Manassa, Colorado for three years. He was the first to introduce basketball and coached the first basketball team there. This sport has always been his first love. On June 12, 1908 he married Harriet Elouise Johnson in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Colorado until 1913 when he moved to Mapleton where he has since resided. To them were born Glenn L., Don B. of Top-penish, Top-penish, Washington; Ivan R., Jay, Springville; Guy, Mapleton; Alton, Pay son; Mrs. Myron S. (Ferl) Bown, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Mark C. (lone) Whiting, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Mrs. Owen (Ora) Rich, Provo. From this union have come also 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Neilson died December 21, 1938 at the age of 54. He later married Birdie , Faucett Jackson, January 15, 1942. She died December 27, 1965. Active in church, city Mr. Nielson has been active in the LDS church. He has taught in the auxiliaries in various capacities. In Mapleton he served two terms on the Town Board. He was secretary of the Cattle Association, was a member of the Mapleton Irrigation Company Com-pany and in 1935 was appointed as a member of the Nebo School Board to finish the unexpired term of J. Emmett Bird. At the end of that term he was elected to the board for a term of 5 years, the last year of this time he served as president of the board. Mr. Nielson is a skilled carpenter car-penter and cabinet maker and has worked on many of the most beautiful homes in the valley.
