All they have to do is to register. When national election time rolls around in 1972, 25 million young people under the age of 25 will be eligible to cast their first vote for the President of their choice. , Rarely in the history of this nation have potential first-time voters made up so large a share of the total voting age population nearly 1 in 5. Hopefully, this will result in a major rejuvenation rejuvena-tion of the major parties with the injection of young and energetic workers. It is up to our present political leadership to welcome and encourage these young Americans. They should listen and incorporate their worthwhile worth-while ideas, utilize their manpower, and encourage, their dedication and participation toward a better tomorrow. We have opened "The System" to them. Now we must demonstrate that they can work effectively within it. Isaiah 5:20 A time has come for America to stand before the looking glass. What are we becoming? Is our nation (and that means we the people) losing her way, betraying the principles erected by two centuries of builders? Where has our morality gone? These are the most vital questions for America at the threshold of a third century of nationhood. If there is an eternal virtue without which free man cannot can-not long exist, it is morality. Loss of morality lowers man to the floor of the jungle, where existence is by brute force and cunning, and the weak and dull-witted are eaten or enslaved. The broad concept of morality acceptable to most God-fearing people encompasses encom-passes what has come to be called the human virtues. Man is moral when his instinct moves him to do right. And "right" is the code of human conduct dictated by Judaeo-Christian Judaeo-Christian ethics as expressed in The Ten Commandments and the life of Jesus Christ. There is no relativity in the definition of "right" no matter what the sociologists may say. There is only one moral code for mankind. It is given by God, Our Creator, and recorded re-corded in the Bible. " Drifting With Tide A nation can become immoral im-moral at the level of leadership leader-ship or within the citizenry. Our nation is becoming immoral im-moral in both areas. It started within the citizenry, and the destructive tide can only be turned by those who began it and those who adjusted to it and now swim with the current. cur-rent. Most of the people who read this and subsequent columns col-umns which we are devoting to America's moral breakdown will, in the inner sanctum of their minds, agree that it is happening; but man is weak and he shuns the responsibility of self incrimination. Let me say here: we are all in this together. By commission or ommission, the U. S. citizenry has defaulted to a national erosion of character which could have been brought on only by individual decay. And the principal default has been in the virtue: courage. We simply haven't had the individual in-dividual fortitude to stand against the tide. So drifting with it, we are becoming weaker and weaker, not swimmers but drifters, a miserable sight on the stage of human history. The Mirror Test As a participating citizen in your nation's actions, stand before the mirror .and look at what we have wrought. Is Communism evil? Yes and no, we have decided. It was obviously evil when it was bloodying the soil of the Ukraine with the mass murder of millions of kulaks (small farmers) on Stalin's orders and under the on-the-scene direction of Commissar Khrushchev. Khru-shchev. Yet Stalin's Soviet Union nevertheless became worthy of respect, in the eyes of U. S. governmental leaders in 1933, and we gave Stalin the badge of decency full diplomatic recognition. President Presi-dent Roosevelt, with most of the citizenry aghast, decided for the nation that Stalin's Communism was not evil. Then, after the non-evil Stalin threw the might of the Red Army into the rape and murdering of Poland as a grinning ally of Germany's obviously evil Adolf Hitler, Communism became evil again in the eyes of America's leadership. lead-ership. Stalin was denounced and scourged in Washington. Because the U. S. was confronted with a Hitler running wild with his devastating Panzer divisions and deadly air armadas, our nation got in bed with Stalin and thus declared him and his freedom-murdering crew not to be evil. It was the practical and safe thing to do. But was it moral? No. It was fcthe immoral act of cowardice. We were afraid of Hitler. Without Russia as an ally we feared possible defeat in World War II by Hitler's Germany. So we compromised our morality moral-ity and allied with evil. Glorifying Evil After the war, with Stalin and his political and military automatons gobbling up eastern east-ern Europe, raping the countries coun-tries and expanding their murderous mur-derous ways, the United States again officially recognized the evil; and a "cold War" with world Communism set in. President Dwight Eisenhower declared world Communism to be a menace to all mankind and pledged that the United States would no relent in its moral responsibility to enslaved en-slaved people until the Iron Curtain was obliterated and people behind it made free. Reg. 7.95 Value Jeadm Teacher shortages which have plagued schools across the nation for almost thirty years have suddenly and dramatically been replaced by teacher surpluses, sur-pluses, according to a study prepared by Utah Foundation, the private research organization. The Foundation analysis was based on a report of the State Board of Education entitled, Status of Teacher Personnel in Utah - 1970-71. The change from shortage to surplus has been brought about by a steady increase in the supply of trained teachers and a sharply reduced demand for new teachers. The Foundation points out that the teacher surplus in Utah probably will continue to grow in the years immediately ahead. The study notes that the demand for new teachers in Utah has resulted from two main factors: (1) teachers needed to fill vacancies when teachers leave the system and (2) teachers needed to fill new positions created to meet enrollment growth and-or reduced class size. In the past both of these factors fac-tors have been important elements in the demand for new teachers. At one time, the total number of teaching positions in the state was rising by approximately ap-proximately 600 per year. Last year, however, there were actually ac-tually 70 fewer teaching positions in the state than there were the year before. As a result, the only employment opportunities for new teachers last year were for those who replaced teachers who left the system. Coupled with the sharply reduced demand for new teachers has been an increased supply of potential teachers. The number of certificated teachers graduating from Utah colleges has nearly doubled over the past decade. In addition, new teachers in Utah are recruited Model AWM-S60-2 1 windows, too. In the early and middle 1960's, more than 50 percent of the teacher-graduates teacher-graduates received teaching positions in Utah. In addition to the 1,041 recent graduates who were employed in Utah last year, Utah schools employed 219 teachers who had Wes. H.
