Kleirv- PL EARLY 500 years ago, a youthful king of Poland and Hungary broke his word, and paid for his faithlessness with death. Ladislas ill was oniy years old when he and the great Hungarian general, John Hunyadi, marched against the invading Turk, Murad II. For four years previous to 1444, Hunyadi had beaten back the infidels in battle after battle, until he broke the Sultan's Sul-tan's power in the Balkans. The Christian rulers of Europe urged on Hunyadi, and Ladislas accepted leadership in a final effort ef-fort to drive the Turk out of Europe. But Murad sued for peace, a treaty was signed and the Turks began to retire. Just then Ladislas received word that a Venetian fleet was on its way to cut off the Turk retreat. i I m v V HECK VO X WANT f -rJITH ANYM0Rf& rt H O P. 1 ffl ftnw ' t - j ' " It was- too tempting an opportunity oppor-tunity to put a final end to the power of the Turkish ruler in Europe, peace or no peace. So Ladislas, against Hunyadi's advice, ad-vice, broke the treaty and marched on Murad's army at the port of Varna, Bulgaria. Embittered by this deception, the Moslems fought like cornered cats, and on November 10, .1444, Murad crushed his faithless enemies. ene-mies. Ladislas was killed, and Hunyadi narrowly escaped with his life. Most cruel cut of all, the Venetian fleet never showed up! In 1935, Bulgaria erected a memorial at Varna, and issued a series of stamps, commemorating this defeat. The stamp shown here reproduces the faMous "Bat tle of Varna" painting by the koi-ish koi-ish artist, Matejko. SECTION TWO to m r 9 lh 193$ BY EA SERVICE, INC. i 3 I . . v m. t -m. - iii m - - - - |
