Show B12 Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Vernal Express t, : Four way stops call for driver courtesy 1 -yv - V'),Hr I 1 )-. ' f n Vernal recently added stop signs at two intersections in the city, the first was placed at the intersection of 500 West and 100 South near the Vernal LDS. The second is near the Uintah Community Com-munity Center at the intersection of 500 South and Vernal Avenue. And a third will be coming soon to the intersection of 500 West and 500 South near the Uintah Care Center. With the new signs, drivers are reminded to stop and yield the right-of-way at stop signs. The simplest rule to remember remem-ber is to stop at the intersection. The first car to reach the intersection inter-section and stop is the first car to proceed. When two cars arrive at the same time, the car on the right goes first. When four cars arrive at the same time, the rule is courtesy. . The Utah State Driver's Handbook Hand-book says, "If you arrive at an intersec tion at approximately the same time as vehicles from different directions, the driver on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right." "If you are in an intersection and want to turn left, you must yield the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. Afteryielding, you may turn left if it is safe to do so." When the Vernal Police Department De-partment announced the new signs in May, Chief Gary Jensen said extra patrol officers would focus on educating drivers rather than issuing citations and that electronic warning signs would remind drivers of the changes. , "That doesn't mean a citation couldn't be issued," said Jensen in aMay interview. "It just means that that's the attitude that we'll have: trying to get people up to speed rather than beat them up with a citation initially."
