Show A8 Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Vernal Express Anadarko Tour Continued from Al cryogenics, every component of the gas liquefies. Separation produces a better quality gas product allowing for near complete hydrocarbon capture. "Gas hydrocarbons like ethane, propane, methane and butane are liquefied in the cryogenic-process," Bates said. "We can capture cap-ture these at extremely low temperature as liquids. Finally, we separate the water from the natural gas liquids using gylcol dehydration. dehy-dration. That water is either recycled for reuse or evaporated in ponds. "The heart of Chipeta is a reciprocating gas compressor," Bates said, as he guided the tour past huge machinery. "The compressor com-pressor pushes the product through a maze of arterial operations and then, into outlet pipelines. Where the product goes depends upon its marketability." According to Bates, the facility collects three salable products in the process: natural gas, natural gas liquids, and condensate product. Once separation is complete, the natural gas liquids are directed via pipeline to refineries or other facilities. The outflow from the plant at 1,300 psi is well above the intake at approximately 900 psi and several times the wellhead pressure, which is sometimes as low as 50 psi. The plant is run by electric motors because they are much more friendly for air quality, and maintenance is reduced. The facility's electric bill is about $500,000 a month given its current level of production. "We have a 138 KV line coming to the plant," Bates said. "That is a deep vein IV into Deseret Power's supply that we are using." He added that so far there has not been one power bump. Chipeta operates the gathering and processing system, but not the delivery pipelines. Take away pipelines are operated by Wyoming Interstate, Colorado Interstate, Questar Pipeline and Questar Gas Management. Together these four pipelines have a take away capacity of 800 million cubic feet of natural gas liquids a day. Anadarko's commercial vision for Chipeta went from "grubbing "grub-bing out sage" to piping product in 14 months. In 2007, Anadarko Anadar-ko had more than 200 employees in Utah. It paid out roughly $12 million in payroll and $80 million in taxes and royalties. Ownership of the Chipeta is split between Anadarko (75 percent) per-cent) and Ute Energy (25 percent). Earlier this year, through a partnership between Anadarko Uintah Midstream, Ute Energy, the Ute Indian Tribe, and Quantum Quan-tum Resources, that financial outlook has increased significantly. "We have a 15 to 20 year commitment here," said Karl Kurz, Anadarko's chief operating officer. "Greater Natural Buttes, Uintah Basin provides a high quality resource with more than 9 trillion cubic feet of gas in reserve." The company's commitment to the area can be measured by its recent scholarship gift to Uintah Basin Applied Technology College. "Over 183 student have already enrolled in (UBATC's) industry-related technical program," said Anadarko regional manager Bill Koch. Koch also credited the Ute Tribe and Ute Energy for their involvement in the project. Curtis Cesspooch, chairman of the Ute Tribe Business Committee, added "that the education tribal members receive today will make the directors of Ute Energy tomorrow."
