Show f Wednesday, January 23, 2008 B5 Vernal Express VYCC holds food drive at ice rink r Freezing Temperatures.;. Ryan Wolfinjer and Dan Hatch run exhaust from their truck into a meter box to thaw frozen water lines. Crews from Ashley Valley Water and Sewer have been busy for the past couple of months attending to frozen meters and water pipes. Usually it is a broken frost plate that is easily replaced and the home owner can get back to receiving water. Other times,, especially when home owners go on vacation and there is little water movement through the pipes, the ice will extend down the pipe towards the home. Meters are placed about four feet into the ground and most are insulated for cold weather protection. There are three different crews that have been kept busy this winter. Deep snow this winter is helping keep frozen water lines to a minimum and crews say it's much better than last year when it was just as cold but with little snow as insulation on the ground. V . - . Ice-skate Ice-skate rentals will remain regular price. "I think it will be a great success and I'm hoping for a lot of community support in this," said Adrienne Francisco, Vernal Youth City Council mayor. The project is chaired by Vernal Youth City Council sophomore sopho-more representative, Nicole Alonso. "We're hoping for a good turnout," Alonso said. "Come, it is going to be fun." During the winter- especially after the holiday season - there is always a great need for food at the local food pantry. The VYCC hopes to help fill some of this need with their food drive. All non-perishable food donations are welcome. The ice-skating rink food drive is a repeat of the successful success-ful food drive the VYCC at the Water Slide in the summer of 2006. VYCC collected more than 1,000 cans of food through the Water Slide food drive project in which people were allowed into the water slide for free with the donation of non-perishable food items. VYCC hopes to have as much success in this endeavor. "It is going to be a lot of fun because it is going to be a lot of families hanging out together," Alonso said. "We targeted it to the families. "Alonso added that anyone is welcome to attend. Senator Sutherland said of the presw dent's messflffei '"The sentiment of Utah Republicans is overwhelmingly for President Roosevelt and whatever he desires Tho me&aga will strengthen strength-en him with the common people I ol ways hsvo believed Roosevelt could poll more votes than any other man who could be named by the Kepubh cans. At present it looks as it Taft would bo the Republican nominee," This announcement appeared in the Vernal Express on Feb. 7, 1908. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was in his last year in office. By Kr!stw Biiunvffli Express Writer During his administration, Roosevelt made William Howard How-ard Taft the Secretary of War. In 1907 he decided that Taft should be his successor as president of the United States. Taft was nominated in 1908 by the Republican Convention; mostly as a result of Roosevelt's campaigning and support. President Roosevelt made a national address describing describ-ing his support for Taft. The senators of Utah and majority of the Utah people supported President Roosevelt and as a result looked to Taft to be the next president. Not surprisingly, William Howard Taft became the 27th president of the United States. He was not, however, the kind of president that people expected and though he was known as a distinguished jurist and effective effec-tive administrator he quickly gained the reputation as a poor politician and president. Taft was uncomfortable in the spotlight and becoming president was actually a result of his wife and President Roos evelt's ambition for him rather than his own. He preferred law to politics and once commented that Roosevelt "ought more often to have admitted the legal way of reaching the same ends." The presidential election of 2008 is scheduled to be held on Nov. 4. This is the 56th election for president and vice president of the United States. The major party candidates for the Democratic Party are former First Lady and U.S. Sen. Hilary Clinton, former Sen. John Edwards; and Sen. Barack Obama. The major party candidates for the Republican Re-publican Party are former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Sen. John McCain; and former Massachussetts Gov. Mitt Romney,. In 1908, President Roosevelt's Roos-evelt's endorsement made a significant impact on the election elec-tion of Taft. In 2008, celebrities like Oprah, Barbra Streisand, and Chuck Norris hope their candidate endorsements will affect the outcome of who becomes the next American president. SUFFERED STROKE WHILE SKIING ALONE Good Samaritans save ailing x-country skier By Error LrsiK Express Writer A Uintah Basin Medical Center staff member is facing a lengthy recovery after suffering suf-fering a stroke, but hospital spokesman Gary Child said the outcome could have been much worse were it not for a group of unknown Good Samaritans. Child said the man, whom he could not identify due to federal fed-eral medical privacy laws, was crosscountry skiing alone near Farm Creek on Jan. 13 when he suffered a stroke. "He was found at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, after laying in the snow, by some snowmobil-ers," snowmobil-ers," Child said. "Given another hour he would have been dead; he would have laid out there all night." The snowmobilers who found the man brought hi m by personal vehicle to UBMC's emergency room. Child said the group left the hospital without giving their names to anyone or providing a way to contact them. He said the man has no family fam-ily in the area and his absence wouldn't have been noticed until it was too late. "Nobody would have missed him until he failed to show up for work," Child said. UBMC is hoping the individuals indi-viduals who helped the man will come forward so they can be recognized. "We appreciate their heroism; hero-ism; their willingness to get involved," Child said.
