Pick the tie breaker by writing what you think will be the final score of the tie breaker game. The tie breaker will count as a correct or incorrect pick during the initial scoring. Then, if needed, the scores of the tie breaker will be used to break the ties as outlined in 86 and 87 below. 3. All entries must be turned into the Recreation Office or the Vernal Express office by 5:00 p.m. the Friday before the week's games or postmarked by Friday and received in the mail no later than Monday. Ties wiH be bro'.en using the tie breaker. The person with the smallest point differential between actual scores ai.d predicted scores will win the tie breaker. If after using the tie breaker there is still a tie, then whoever had the closest score to the winning team will be the winner. If at this point there is a tie, then the "pick the winner" points will be split among the tied contestants. She also hopes to attend the theater the-ater while in London. She has been sponsored by many businesses in the Vernal area and appreciates all the local lo-cal support. She is very excited about this opportunity. Being part of the Uintah High Cheer Squad has been very rewarding for her this year. Melissa enjoys serving her school and fellow students. Eagle Eye on Dinosaur National Monument Each winter, Dinosaur National Monument hosts a national celebrity, the bald eagle. Utah ranks in the top five states for viewing wintering bald eagles, and the open waters of the Green River provide excellent fishing for our guests. Bald eagles as adults are easily identified, with a white head and tail contrasting a dark body, they are difficult to confuse con-fuse with other birds. Vultures (buzzards) resemble eagles from a distance, although, the vulture's vul-ture's v-shaped soaring pattern readily distinguishes it from the eagles method of holding its wings straight out. Immature bald eagles, however, how-ever, are more difficult, and can be easily confused with golden eagles. Until they reach the age of four or five years, immature bald eagles are a mottled brown color, similar to adult golden eagles. Check out the legs for a positive identification. The more 'modest' golden eagle has feathers over the entire leg, while the bald eagle has two to three inches of bright yellow leg showing. Perhaps the best place to see bald eagles at the monument this winter is from the visitor center parking lot near Jensen. Focus your binoculars on the dead cottonwood tree by the river and often you will see an eagle perched. Inside the visitor visi-tor center you will find various guides to help you identify the other wintering birds and wildlife. wild-life. Once you've seeii the eagle perched or soaringrbove the river, maybe you will understand under-stand why President Reagan said in 1982, "... to glimpse this majestic raptor, is to understand why the Founding Fathers chose it to represent the strength and courage of our great nation." UHS swimmers find stiff competition in Ogden On Thursday the Utes swim team took to the road again as they traveled to Ogden for a tri-meet. They found the Ogden High School team friendly, but stiff competition. Ogden is coached by Jerry Hodgkinson, who grew up in the Basin. His mother, Suzy, coached the Vernal Vipers and the Uintah High School team years ago. Her teams painted the murals that still adorn the walls of the Vernal indoor pool. Final scores for the meet for the boys' team were Ogden 336; Uintah 140; Ben Lomond 86. The girls' scores were Ogden 260; Uintah 162; Ben Lomond 110. They were not able to score again during that period. Goalie Andrew Shiozaki played hard and deflected several attempts from Davis County players. In the second period, Davis came out and scored a quick goal, tieing the game at a goal apiece. However, a minute and a half later Fleetwood glided past two of the opposing defense men to sneak one past their goalie, scoring his first of two goals. That gave Vernal the lead again, bringing the score to 2-1. Shortly into the third period Fleetwood would score his second sec-ond goal of the game, bringing bring-ing the score to 3-1. The game began heating up with altercations alterca-tions resulting in penalties for both teams. Lars Carlson (20), Vernal, took advantage, sending send-ing a slapshot off into the net at three minutes left in the third period, from a deflection by JC Parslow, logging the score in at 4-1. This was enough for the Davis' coachus to make a decision deci-sion to pull their goalie. The strategy would give them six players skating out. a one player advantage over the Vernal team. However, this proved a futile attempt at a possible tie. as lightning in the form of Duel Hacking (1), came across the ice taking the puck from a Davis defense man, to score a goal on an open net. The game ended with a score of 5-1 in favor of the Vernal Raptors. A practice game was played at 11:30 becau.se they had ice time. To make a more interesting interest-ing game, players were shuffled around. Putting defense man Hagen Simper, who had never played goalie, in to guard the net, while Shiozaki played out. They lost 6-3 but enjoyed the extra ice time. The Bantams current record stands at 2-1-1, with a game in Salt Lake City on Dec. 16 at the Olympic Ice Sheet in Keams where they will play Logan. |
