Girls basketball narrowly loses to Delta It was a disappointing loss for the girls on the Uintah basketball bas-ketball team during their game against Delta High School Friday. The Utes started off with a lead against the Delta Rabbits which they held for most of the game. At the end of the first quarter, Uintah led the game 10 to 9. At the half, Uintah held a four point lead, with the score 23 to 19. The Ute players also ended the half with just four fouls compared to eight Rabbit fouls. At the end of the third period, peri-od, the Utes still led Delta 33 to 31. In the fourth period, the Delta team tied up the game at 34 with 6:39 to go. Big weekend of hockey for Utes On Friday night, the Uintah High School Varsity hockey team met their longtime rival, the Bulldogs from Craig, Colorado. Colo-rado. The game ended in a tie, 3-3. . Assistant Coach Mike Kitz-miller Kitz-miller said the Utes always play hard against the Bulldogs, and this game was no exception. Both teams scored two goals in the first period. The first Ute goal was shot by Ethan Kitzmiller, assisted by George Laub, and the second by Tyler Larsen. In the first few minutes of the second period, the Bulldogs Bull-dogs scored their third goal followed fol-lowed by another from the Utes by Danny Griffith, assisted by Landon Larsen. The third period was tense -7 IT) , to make the score 38-34. It stayed at that score until Delta made two free throws and a three-point shot with about two minutes to go, tieing up the score again. Uintah tried to hang on, making one point on a free throw attempt. Then Delta pulled ahead after a two-point two-point basket with 1:45 to go on the clock. The score went back and forth between the teams after fouls were made on both sides until the score was 41 for Uintah and 42 for Delta. A foul by Uintah with 7.6 seconds left to go in the game gave the Rabbits a three point lead that turned out to be unrecoverable for the Lady Utes. The Utes moved the ball down the court quickly and passed the ball f r with both teams trying to take the lead. The Bulldogs got in seven shots and the Utes, three. Neither team was able to score and the game ended in a tie. A rematch between the Utes and the Bulldogs is scheduled in January. Junior Varsity Utes got off to a great start on Friday with Danny Griffith, assisted by George Laub, making the first goal of the game. The Bulldogs controlled the rest of the game, however, scoring one goal in the first period and five in the second period. The game ended 6-1. On Saturday, Varsity Utes played the Hunter Wolverines at Cottonwood Heights Ice Arena, Are-na, winning the game 4-2. for a last minute three-point attempt. The Lady Utes lost, 44-41. Even . though the results were not desirable, Coach Shannon Johnson felt his team played well. "We only had 10 turnovers for the game which is a season best for us," said Johnson. Johnson said he felt Delta's guard, Shaylee Nielsen, who will be playing at Snow College next year, played a terrific game. Nielsen scored one more point by herself in the fourth quarter than all of the Uintah players and had a game total of 24 points. Johnson said Nielsen has exceptional range in shooting off the dribble, something that is unusual for Going into the second period, pe-riod, the game was 1-1. Marty Montgomery, assisted by Aaron Hacking, scored in the second period. The Wolverines tied the score with a goal in the third period pe-riod with just four minutes left in the game. Then Coach David Pipher called a time out He said the team was not keeping the stick on the ice and kept missing shots. He told the Utes to take a deep breath and keep the pressure pres-sure on. The Utes obviously listened, scoring two goals with less than three minutes left in the game. "I thought we out-hustled them Saturday," said Pipher. "Carlyn, White and McKenzie Simper really worked hard defending her," said Johnson. Amy Parkinson led the Ute team with 16 points, Nicole Brady was close behind, accumulating accu-mulating 14 points. Johnson summed up the experiences of the game and season by saying, "We've had double digit leads in the second half of every game we've played this year. We just need to spend a little more time in practice on situational and end of the game stuff so we can have the knowledge and confidence to finish when the game is close. Johnson also added, "We have a new challenge this week when we go to Grantsville and Tooele and that is learning to play and win on the road." ' For the other girl's teams, their fight against Delta wasn't - "It was really a fun game," said Pipher. "We controlled the game quite well" The Ute goalie kept out a lot of shots from the other team. In the meantime. Drew Stewart scored an unassisted goal in the first period, followed by another an-other goal in the second period by Aaron Hacking assisted by Stewart and Zack Barnes.
