It is quick and easy, just call Joe Lengal 801-373-9500 On Thursday Uintah High School, Union High School, and Uintah Dinos (a special needs program for adults) held a Bocce Tournament to see which teams from The Basin would be going to state. Bocce is a game where each team has four balls of a certain color. The main goal is to roll the balls down the court and be the closest to a smaller ball already on the court. If a team's ball is closest to the small ball, they get a point. If they have two balls closer than that of the other team's they get two points. There were two divisions in which participants were grouped. Unified teams are teams with two special needs people, and two other people, usually parents or other relatives. rela-tives. The doubles teams are made of four special needs participants. par-ticipants. In the tournament held at the high school, there were two groups of doubles (group A and group B) with four teams in each group. The winners of each division will go on to compete in the state tour nament on Oct. 6 and 7. In the unified division the Union Cougars came in first place, with the Uintah Bull Frogs in second, the Uintah Dinos in third, and the Union Cats in fourth. All of these teams will compete at state. In the doubles division A The Uintah Super Stars took first, Uintah Dinos second, Uintah Speeders third, and Uintah Flyers fourth. All of these teams will be going to state. In the doubles division B the Uintah Jets took first, Uintah Dinos second, Uintah Smilers third, and Uintah Hot Shots took fourth. None of these teams will be going to state; however, Alise Terill of the Uintah Smilers will be going as an alternate for the other doubles dou-bles teams. The Uintah Dinos will also be sending a basketball team to the state tournament. The people on the team are: Derek Allred, Kevin Crowther, Jon Grant, Shane Murray, Lloyd Osbora, Joseph Ormsbee, Derrick Ross, Tori Sheffer, and Daniel Street. Cross-country team does well in pre-region meet The Uintah cross-country team competed in the pre-region tournament on Sept. 20th. Although all the teams in the region attended, many didn't bring their entire teams so it was hard to tell whether or not the Uintah team will do as well during the region competition. The boys team took 2nd place in this tournament. The top five runners were Caleb Nelson, Jesse Greenwood, Cadin White, Cody Watkins, and Rex Bunderson. Caleb took 2nd over all. The girls took third place and their top five runners were Mary McKee, Jessica Hunting, Hunt-ing, Candice Workman, Amber Martin, and Sarah McPhie. The region tournament is on Oct. 11, and the team has three meets before then. 1 1 Ashlay tVollay Medical Center ; )yf Valfey radical Center invitee dl cur cot h:rs, crciithiR. btcrs, teocnters, arJ friar-da to have a ccr.;:;::crr.;L ? . t ( x. .,.., " .. ,i . Senior Instructor Steve Wallenda began Vernal Tan Soo Do (pronounced Tong Su Doe) classes last year, but is now opening up more classes. Wallenda first started studying study-ing the ancient art as a teenager living in Alaska. "There wasn't a lot to do there in the winter and I discovered Tang Soo Do." I was really drawn to the tradition tradi-tion and history." Wallenda had a Tang Soo Do Club in Vernal in the 90s but left to go to grad school at Utah State University. After graduating, gradu-ating, he returned to Vernal to teach for USU. "When I came back some of my former students stu-dents wanted to get back together togeth-er and practice, so I started it up again." When asked about the differences differ-ences between Tang Soo Do and other martial arts disciplines, Wallenda said, "Tang Soo Do has a 2000 year old Korean history of manners and civic pride." Wallenda explained that in the U.S. there is a break down in lineage and legitimacy of martial arts. Many programs are a blend of different styles or are really specialized such as Tae Kwon Do which focuses a lot on kicking. "Our system is really complete. Tang Soo do encompasses all aspects of martial mar-tial arts." "Tang Soo Do focuses on the development of the whole person per-son and encourages individuals individu-als to have a well rounded life." Tang Soo Do is the largest traditional tradi-tional martial arts organization in the world. The discipline itself focuses on self defense, physical fitness, self discipline and peace of mind. Wallenda said the great thing about Tang Soo Do is that everyone works at his or her own pace or level, everyone will get better and improve. The association has even worked with people in wheelchairs. The focus is on self-improvement.
