In conjunction con-junction with National Public Lands Day also on Sept. 30, state parks across Utah waived fees for the day. The museum sponsored special spe-cial events including storytelling, storytell-ing, a color contest for children ages one ttr 13, "Guess Hw Many Dinahs," and a dinosaur dino-saur gliders contest. Colleen Lawson, museum retail sales manager, read "Curious George and the Dinosaur," giving the important lesson to not climb on museum exhibits. Kenna Dawn Wilson, who works at the museum and has lived in Vernal off and on for several years, said she does not think that most people living in Vernal realize all that the area has to offer. She said people come from all over the world to experience "Dinosaurland," and she has met people visiting visit-ing the museum from China, France, Germany, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. A visitor from Salt Lake City, who used to live in Roosevelt, also commented on how he used to take it all for granted. He brought some relative's children to see the museum on Saturday, not even knowing it was free that day. The new Utah Field House of Natural History opened in June of 2004 and includes some exhibits from the old museum across the street. The museum features a short informative video, interactive displays for children, real fossils and fossil fos-sil replicas, a room that takes I encourage you. The PACE program IS fast! For the past couple of weeks, the museum has housed a touring tour-ing fossil exhibit showing an extinct North American Bison being attacked by two saber-toothed saber-toothed cats, also extinct. A different dif-ferent species of this bison, the Yellowstone Bison, still exists today. To enhance a child's learning learn-ing experience, the museum daily provides scavenger hunt workbooks, the "PeeWee Paleontologist" for younger children and the "Junior Scientist" for older children. These booklets help children look closer at the exhibits and understand concepts on their own level. Winners for the coloring contest in the one to four age group were Annie Pitcher for neatest and Dylan Cormitan for most colorful. In the five to 13 age group, Julian Juarez won most realistic and Nanner Eldridge won most creative.
