Show Health officers remind about tobacco Joseph B. Shaffer, Director Health Officer, TriCounty Health Department, would like to remind the public about the truth about cancer and tobacco. Cancer of the mouth, lung cancer, can-cer, cancer of the nasal cavities and esophagus, Leukoplakia (white sores in the mouth), gum recession, bone loss, abrasion of teeth, bad breath and yellow teeth, are some of the effects of tobacco. Most people are aware of the effects tobacco has on them, but they are addicted. This is why it is best to never start using the harmful product of tobacco. tobac-co. Most think they will not become addicted, they will only try it once, or they can quit whenever they want. Ask anyone any-one who smokes or uses snuff, they will say it is not that easy. The body becomes physically and psychologically dependent on nicotine. It produces a pleasurable plea-surable feeling that makes the user want to have more and more. Eventually they build up a tolerance to the drug, meaning mean-ing they have to increase their usage. Along with being a slave to the nicotine, there are many other tolls tobacco takes upon your body. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. for both men and women and 87 percent of lung cancer deaths can be attributed to tobacco. Each year, 440,000 people die in the U.S. from tobacco use (cancer.org). Those are staggering stag-gering statistics that are only growing with time. Though cancer is the leading death cause associated with tobacco, there are many other health problems that arise and also lead to death. Just to name a few, heart disease, aneurysms, bronchitis, emphysema, stroke, pneumonia, and asthma. Also, remember tobacco isn't free. It is actually rather expensive, expen-sive, and since it is used up fast, tobacco has to be purchased frequently. fre-quently. By using this you are paying for death to come to you. You are paying for the pain that will most certainly be inflicted upon you when the health problems prob-lems arise. So, here's your challenge. Don't start. Don't start because you love being pain free from cancer, because you love your money and you would rather spend it on something worthwhile, worth-while, because you love breathing breath-ing fresh air, and most of all because you love being alive! If you have already become involved in this dangerous habit, there is hope. Quitting is not easy, but it is possible. There are people around you that are willing to help as well as the Utah Tobacco Quit Line (1-888-567-TRUTH). Again, this presentation is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend in order to learn more about a problem that is touching so many lives in Colorado. This type of drug use is appearing in rural areas that were once thought to be far removed from its abuse, but statistics now show it is growing grow-ing in small town settings at an alarming rate. So attend this helpful presentation and learn what you need to know to help stop the growing trend. By T.G. SCARECROW. i .Vernal Local AVMC pediatrician wins UfePoint Leadership Award Last June at the Annual LifePoint Hospitals Leadership Retreat, held in New York City, the first annual LifePoint Physician Leadership Award for distinguished service and leadership was given to Dr. Rodney A. Pollaryi Ashley Valley Medical Center Chief of Staff for 2005. LifePoint Hospitals is a nationwide chain of hospitals dedicated to providing quality qual-ity health care service in rural areas. Annual awards are given to individuals who have exemplified exem-plified service in one of the "High Five" areas of their mission mis-sion statement. It is an honor for the community and Dr. Pollary to receive this award for physician leadership. Dr. Pollary was chosen after careful consideration of the many physician leaders working work-ing at the 52 hospitals nationwide. nation-wide. Each hospital elects a member of the medical staff to serve as Chief of Staff. While serving as Chief, a physician sacrifices many hours to provide pro-vide leadership to the medical staff, provide advice and direction direc-tion to the hospital staff and to work with the governing board of the hospital in providing insight and direction toward the medical issues that face the community. Dr. Rod Pollary joined the medical staff of AVMC in 2002. Prior to that time he practiced pediatrics in Salt Lake City, where he founded and developed devel-oped two major pediatric clinics: clin-ics: Willow Creek Pediatrics and Nightime Pediatrics. He has been nationally recognized for his pediatric leadership and innovative practice methods. Initially, he came to Vernal on an interim basis until a new pediatrician could be found. However, Dr. Pollary was embraced by the community, and in the process, he developed devel-oped a strong desire to develop a long term pediatric service in the Basin. He then founded "DinosaurLand Pediatrics", which has grown from one provider pro-vider to 4 providers within the .4 years he has been here. Dr. Pollary was also instrumental instrumen-tal in providing "after hours" urgent care for children, which has helped cut costs and improve access for care for children chil-dren in the area. In 2004, Dr. Pollary was elected elect-ed to become the Chief of Staff at Ashley Valley Medical Center in the year 2005. For one year he served as Chief Elect and is currently serving as Past Chief.
