"Chelsea was great at the pageant. She looked beautiful and presented pre-sented herself well for Uintah County," said Barbera Piner, the director for the Miss Uintah County pageant. Dave Haws the Miss Utah pageant director added, "I'm so pleased with the talented and beautiful girls Uintah County sends to Miss Utah!" As Roth did last year, this year's contestants are preparing pre-paring through a series of free workshops organized by Piner. "The reason I volunteer is because I love the program and I think that it is an amazing amaz-ing program for women for the scholarships and growth. Even if you are not the winner you still grow from the workshops. I really believe in the program and think it is wonderful." Piner said the most rewarding aspect of the program is seeing the development and growth that happens in the girls from the time they win Miss Uintah County until the time they go to Miss Utah. The Miss Uintah County and Miss Utah pageants are part of the Miss America Organization, which heads 51 of the state programs and hundreds hun-dreds of local pageants. Meet John Griffith, Vernal's new physician By Jennifer Petty Express Writer For Dr. John Griffith, moving mov-ing to Vernal to practice as an OBGYN is almost like moving home. Raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Griffith said that he "always wanted to return to a rural community." Prior to moving to Vernal, Griffith practiced obstetrics and gynecology in a small town outside of St Louis. He started his undergraduate degree at Ricks College in Idaho and finished it at BYU-Provo. He then went to medical school in St. Louis, did an internship in Denver, then returned to St. Louis for his residency. It was in St Louis that he met his wife, a Missouri native, at a Cardinals baseball game. When asked how he decided decid-ed to specialize in OBGYN, Griffith said, "I grew up in a small town and wanted to do family medicine, but in med school I realized that I like surgery." He added that he felt earlier in med school that he had ruled out practicing psychology psy-chology or OBGYN from the beginning of med school, but during his OB rotation, he realized real-ized that OBGYN Was unique. Griffith will no doubt be filling an important part in balancing the obstetrics workload work-load in the area, but Griffith hastened to say that he hopes to expand the gynecologic services ser-vices in the area and doesn't want to or intend to take work away from other doctors. He will do some deliveries, but he wants to focus more on gynecology gyne-cology and helping in solving many of the health issues that are unique to women. "I feel I have a lot to offer in that area," said Griffith. "Many women think the problems prob-lems they have can't be solved, but there are many treatments that can help women with then-unique then-unique health needs." As a gynecologist, Griffith said, "I specialize in caring for women who are peri- and post menopause, helping resolve or improve many ailments or annoyances associated with this period of life. Griffith came to Vernal with his wife Jan, and his six children three daughters (ages 9, 10 and 11) and three sons (age 13, and twins age 17). When asked if it was hard to leave his practice in St. Louis, Griffith said, "I left a practice of about 5,000 patients and I am starting over from scratch. That practice was as developed as it could be, and I am excited to be here and try something new." Griffith, an avid fan of hockey, was excited to learn that Vernal had an ice skating rink. He also said that moving to Vernal was made easier for his two older sons, who are also very enthusiastic about hockey, because there was a rink here. Griffith added, "Coming from a larger hospital, I was encouraged to see that the hospital hos-pital here still provides a lot of services that aren't usually seen in rural areas. The staff, facilities, and equipment that are available here in Vernal will allow us to take care of most problems so patients won't have to go elsewhere for treatment. The community should be proud of the hospital hospi-tal it is ranked among the top 100 rural hospitals in the nation." footsteps 2001-2003.
