Hunters to bring in elk for testing The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) has begun testing elk for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) for hunting hunt-ing units 8 and 9, the North and South slopes of the Uinta Mountains. "We really need hunters to bring in their elk," said Boyde Black well, regional wildlife manager. "We need to collect a valid sample size from these units and we would much prefer to take those samples from the elk hunters harvest rather than collecting our own." "With over 4,000 deer sampled statewide during the last two years, only 1 1 have tested positive posi-tive for CWD," Blackwell said. Of those 1 1 positive deer, five have come from the Diamond Mountain area. We'd like to know if elk also have the disease dis-ease and how prevalent it is." If the DWR cannot collect enough samples from hunters, they may have to collect the remainder to reach the statistically statisti-cally valid sample size necessary to determine how widespread the disease is in Northeastern Utah. The biologists would rather take samples from hunter harvests because the testing procedure pro-cedure is still a lethal one. "We exceeded our deer target tar-get numbers for the Northeast Region last year with the help and cooperation of our sportsmen," sports-men," Blackwell said. "We need our hunters to step up again, for both elk and deer this time." "We will have our usual check stations in operation for both elk and deer general season rifle hunts for the first three days of each respective hunt," Blackwell said. "These check stations are located near the Strawberry Reservoir on Highway 40, the Red Cloud Loop tumoff on Hwy 191 and the Brush Creek Road. We will also have roving teams collecting samples in the Book Cliffs." Other places harvested elk and deer may be taken are the Northeast Regional Office, 152 East 100 North in Vernal or to the Fisheries Station in Dutch John during normal office hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Other regions are also collecting samples, please contact their offices for exact times and locations. According to the World Health Organization: "There is currently current-ly no evidence that CWD in cer-vidae cer-vidae (deer and elk) is transmitted transmit-ted to humans." While there is no evidence, hunters may wish to take some simple precautions w hen handling their game. Do not harvest or eat animals that appear sick. Wear rubber or latex gloves when field dressing and processing process-ing game meat. Bone out the meat from the deer or elk and remove all fat, membranes and connective tissues. tis-sues. Minimize handling of the brain, spinal cord, spleen and lymph nodes. Do not cut through the spinal cord except to remove the head. Do not consume the brain. spinal cord, eyes, spleen, tonsils or lymph nodes. Do not use household utensils to field dress or process meat. Thoroughly clean all knives, equipment and work areas w ith a 5050 solution of household bleach and water.
