Cross-Country hits their stride The Uintah Basin Back Country Horsemen (L'BBCH). a chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of Utah, raised $6,000 for the Children's Justice Centers in the Uintah Basin. The ride took place Sept. 1 1 with 30 riders participating. The event included a poker ride, drawings for a wide ariety of prizes and an auction. The first place prize in the drawing was a plane ticket to anywhere in the United States. The second drawing was for a Camp Chef stove and the third was for a handmade quilt. Items for the auction were donated by local businesses and individuals. The auctioneer was Travis Peatross from Peatross Auctions. UBBCH was started about 10 years ago with a goal of maintaining access to the back country for multiple purposes. Jennifer Rook, a member of the club, said the horsemen believe that access should be open to all people who want to enjoy the countryside, whether they ride horses, bikes, 4-w heelers or hike on their own feet. She also said the UBBCH members practice "leave no trace" camping, which emphasizes "take only pictures, leave only footprints." The fund raising event was conducted in memory of Cecil Gurr. who started the Uintah Basin's first Children's Justice Center and devoted many years of his life to abused children and to the prevention of abuse.
