I or more information, informa-tion, call local chapter president Carla Cleavinger. 7S1-I54S or seerelarv -treasurer Kris Davis, 722-5524. i - UBATC Police Academy cadetts enraduate Graduation ceremonies stirred the hearts of both the Uintah Basin Applied Technology College Police Academy cadets and a large audience gathered for commencement exercises in the UBATC conference room Sept. 18. After nine months of attending evening and Saturday Academy classes, 1 1 graduates were honored before friends, family, fam-ily, adjunct instructors, UBATC administration and law enforcement enforce-ment officials. This was the fifth session held at the UBATC Police Academy. "We have great people in this class," praised Wayne Embleton, UBATC Police Academy Director, who welcomed wel-comed the audience and recognized recog-nized the substantial "efforts and dedication" of family demonstrated dem-onstrated to the cadets over the past nine months. The speakers at the graduation included Paul Hacking, UBATC President, Chief Deputy Wally Hendricks, Duchesne County Sheriff's Office and Kenneth Wallentine, Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Supervisor. ) After being addressed, the class of session 5 was honored with their own profile; stating they began the law enforcement Congratulations session of this academy w ith 12 cadets and graduated 1 1 . Numbered among the 1 1 graduates was one female and 10 male cadets. The classes had been held in Duchesne, Venial, Roosevelt and Salt Lake City. Some of the cadets attended both the Special Functions Officer and Law Enforcement Officer block of this academy. The Special Functions Officer block began in January, 2004. Special awards were given to selected graduates. Karla Strebel received the High Academic Award; Robert A. Meinrod, Firearms Award; Scott Meek, Most Improved Shooter Award and Superior Fitness Award; and Tracy Flint Williams, High Achiever Award. The Cecil F. Gurr Award was presented to Karla Strebel. This award is sponsored by the Roosevelt Police Department in conjunction with UBATC in honor of Roosevelt's late Police Chief. It was presented to Strebel by Lt. Mel Curtis, retired, Vernal Police Department, honorary member of the Roosevelt Police Department. He was assisted by Beryl Gurr, Chief Cecil Gurr's father. The Cecil F. Gurr Award is given to a cadet who demonstrates demon-strates the attributes of Gurr, namely dedication and leadership. leader-ship. Graduating cadets were Anthony Carlson, Joshua Christensen, Shawn Cole, Timothy Kristoffer Dickson, Jody Hodgkinson, Lander Scott Meek, Robert A. Meinrod, Conroy T. Reed, Karla Strebel. Tracy Flint Williams and Joshua Yazzie. Most of the cadets live in Duchesne, Roosevelt, Bluebell, Altamont, Ft. Duchesne and Vernal. The cadets had over 30 instructors teach them from law enforcement agencies throughout through-out the Uintah Basin and some from outside the Uintah Basin. Some of the instructors have been attorneys, teachers and even a school principal. The cadets have also been taught over 100 subjects of curriculum. The cadets averaged 28.3 years old, the oldest being 38 and the youngest being 22. The average years of formal education edu-cation they received was 13.3 years. All of the cadets are married mar-ried and collectively they have 22 children. The average scores for the graduates was 90.3 percent per-cent proficiency in firearms and 89.3 percent for all practical exercise, written tests and physical phys-ical fitness skills. r- r i - - - M I I fin 'H if.
