Charles Grav of VFW Post 9275, announced the son of this year's Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary "Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition." Bjmb area students in grades 9 through 12 have the opportunity to compete in the 55th annua audio essay competition compe-tition and in valuable scholarships, scholar-ships, tnps and awards. This competition com-petition is open to public, private or home schooled students. "Young people who participate in the competition com-petition benefit by gaining a better understanding of their country, thetr freedoms and their obligation to America," says Commander Gray Additional opportunities for students stu-dents include: increased self-confidence and poise, experience in polishing pol-ishing cofnmunicatioa skills, and the opportuaity for seif-e&pressko. Students that adv ance to become their state's first place winner are given the chance to expand their knowledge of our nation's capital city during a full four-day tour of Washington, D C, plus the prospect of meeting and befriending students from every state. During the many years that the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary have been involved with Voice of Democracy, more than 7 million high school students have participated, interested students need only write and then record a three to five minute audioessay while expressing express-ing their v iew of the patriotic theme -Reaching Out To America's Future." All state winners receive at least a $1,000 national scholarship, but could win the $25,000 first place award. A total of $139,500 in national scholarships are awarded to student national finalists.
