Wallli Vernal Express If Curt Sinclear, Red Fleet State Park superintendent, gets his way the recovered three slabs of dinosaur footprints hurled into the lake two weeks ago will be reattached and refurbished to their original condition. Located about 12 miles north of Vernal on Highway 191, Red Fleet gets its named for the red rock formations that look like battleships. The State Park is also famous for its dinosaur trackways. track-ways. The slabs which were one of five dinosaur trackways in the walkway, were pried up and thrown into the lake by three West Valley Boy Scouts. Last week the slabs were found by some volunteer divers, two near the waters edge and another about 10 feet away. "I would say we have recovered recov-ered more than 90 percent of what was disturbed,'' Sinclear said. "With the three slabs we have a 9 track which is spectacular, without them we are missing four of the tracks," Sinclear said. " " I -i ; . .... . J. The incident has gained national nation-al exposure with mention of it on the Jay Leno and the David Letterman Late Night Show. "It is amazing the interest people peo-ple have shown in this trackway," said Sinclear. "A Salt Lake City company is sending a free sample of a 3-M product which they believe could reattach the slabs," Sinclear said. "A worker at the Deserado Mine suggested using an epoxy used to anchor bolts in the ceiling of the mine." Sinclear plans to test the products prod-ucts and use which ever works best. The trackway was discovered in about 1986 by Alden Hamblin, then the director of the Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal. He noticed the track while he was picnicking near them. He and Dr. Sue Ann Bilbey, paleontologist at the museum returned and mapped the dinosaur tracks. The tracks were known as early as 1946 by the family of ranchers in the area. Monday, Dr. Bilbey said she believed something positive would come out of the situation. "We have received national attention, and I believe the Boy Scout of America will look at better training for their leaders," she said. The three Scouts have been charged with destruction of natural natu-ral resources. They will be tried in Juvenile Court To access the Red Fleet picnic, boat ramp and camping area take the first right from Vernal at the sign. To access the swimming areas and dinosaur trackway trail, take the second right from Vernal.
