New show hung at Western Heritage Museum By Virginia Harrington Feature Writer Janis Bigelow, director of the Western Heritage Museum, has been busily helping Stan Elmer of the Associated Utah Artists hang 36 paintings for the new show which will run from August 17 through Sept. 21. Elmer said the Associated Utah Artists was started in 1939 by Florence Ware, who also started the Uian Water Colors Association. It includes artists mainly from the Wasatch Front, but with an occasional occa-sional artist from as far away as SL George. Elmer said this year all the paintings are done by artists from Salt Lake and Davis counties. Artists may join the association only by invitation. Membership is generally limited to 33-35 members and meetings are held in members' homes. When someone leaves the association, whether through choice or death, other members begin looking look-ing at the work of other area artists. If a member is impressed by someone's some-one's ability, that person is invited to attend a meeting and to bring samples of his or her work. If the talent is sufficient, the new member is welcomed into the association. Elmer, who has three of his own paintings in the show, said all the pieces in the show are for sale at prices set by association members. Bigelow said the show is somewhat smaller this year than in past years but the pieces on display are excellent excel-lent and worth coming in to look at and perhaps even to purchase. Dr. Justin F. Feature Writer A partnership between the Dinosaurland Travel Board, the Utah Travel Council, the Chamber of CommerceConvention Bureau, the Ute Tribe and Western Park has resulted in a video presentation of the best Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah counties have to offer. Scenery, wildlife, events and businesses busi-nesses all appear in the video, which took one and a half years to complete. com-plete. Its purpose is to attract attention atten-tion to Dinosaurland and to let potential visitors know of the wide diversity of things to do and see, places to stay and to eat, without traveling all the way into Salt Lake City. Jackie Felt of the Chamber of Commerce saw a similar video of Salt Lake City and thought it would be a good idea for the Tri-county area as well. After, much discussion and consultation, the Travel Board obtained a matching grant from the Utah Travel Council and work was begun. A firm from Salt Lake City won the bid to develop the video. Footage was filmed during every season of the year, all over the Dinosaurland area. The video, titled "Dinosaurs & So Much More," is available on CD and video tape from the Dinosaurland Travel Board. It has been sent as a promotional represen-, tation of the area to trade shows, travel bureaus, travel agents and television networks, including Discovery Channel and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It has even made its way to Japan in CD form. Copies have been sent along with a packet of information on Dinosaurland to Jay Leno and David Letterman, both of whom used the damaged Red Fleet trackway in their late night show performances. Lori Olmstead. executive director of the Travel Board, said the video is available to businesses that wish to use it in promotional campaigns for a minimal fee that covers the cost of each copy. if -1 BRIAN K.
