He also teaches adjunct classes in accounting at the local USU campus. The local SBDC h one of 400 cation wide and II in Utah. U is funded by the Small Business Administration (SBA) and USU. Holmes said it is designed to be a one stop shop for information and research needs with one-on-one counseling, non-credit classes and seminars. Clients have the opportunity opportu-nity to learn the major necessities of running a business, such as finding funding, filing payroll taxes and marketing strategies. The Breers started their guide service ser-vice business in 1987. It has grown from the two of them to 12 guides from April through September. In 1993 they opened a retail outlet in Dutch John to complement their guide service. In 1998 they bought a building that is currently housed near Flaming Gorge Lodge. fcQ"t Bay Wrtio wtth Ootd plated door frame Abatable fur rMur 90s or propane DAYS SAME AS CASH OAC Heating, Inc. 12. ion rree i-ooo- V 1 1 r Ann 789-6918 .jam - 6-10 p.m. 6-10 p.m. 6-10 p.m. 6-10 p.m. 6-10 p.m. 6-10 p.m. 6-10 p.m. Vernal Roosevelt Vernal Roosevelt Vernal Vernal Vernal Roosevelt $50 per month Roosevelt $50 per month a.; MM 5 - Sept. He said it prepared him to think the whole business process through and enabled him to use different dif-ferent problem solving methods. It provided access to resources, information infor-mation and financial backing. The Breers can now analyze a situation before taking action and thus can prev ent many mistakes, avoid heartbreak heart-break and reduce risk. Dennis said the class .helped turn most with financing, advertising, employee matters and taxes. Nicholson also owned her own business before taking die NX Level class and seeking one-on-one counseling coun-seling from Holmes. She did quilting quilt-ing part time in her home while working a regular part-time job and taking care of her children. When her job and home situation changed, she wanted to do the quilting business busi-ness full-time and felt she needed guidance. Nicholson said the class helped her gain insight into many aspects of her business such as taxes, effective effec-tive advertising and how to present her business to the public. She learned pitfalls to watch for and more effective ways of doing things. Her business has been full-time full-time for 14 months and is growing at i steady pace. Nicholson said the class was very helpful and advises new entrepreneurs to take advantage advan-tage of both the Class and the counseling. coun-seling. Approximately 60 percent of the SBDC clients are people who want to start a new business. The other 40 percent already own a business, many as single proprietors like Nicholson, but some with as many as 10 or more employees like the Breers. Start-up classes are taught for that 60 percent of clients who are trying their hand at entrepre-neurship entrepre-neurship for the first time. Holmes said this is an important first step before seeking financial backing as it involves learning to create a busi p I Saturday - August J Additional 10 On 1 1 And Save 10 On Already Reduced Scratch Am Offer valid at Sears Dealer Stoats only m U (LORD q financing until August 2002 Q on all appliances over 399 and TVs and camcorders over $499 when you use your Sears card sale 399" KENMORE washer, Save $70 Triple Action Agitator," new Ultra Rinse- system. 22702. Holmes explained that the business plan allows the lending institution to analyze rise thought and research that have gone into the new business and thus to determine the degree of risk involved. Knowing the degree of risk is important for the new business owner as well, cautioned Holmes. Bankruptcy avoidance is a major goal of the SBDC and often the best action is to take no action if the business concept is high rik. Holmes said it is important to stop someone from mortgaging his or her home for a business that has linle chance of success. Holmes said that of the 60 percent of clients w ho are start-up, about 90 percent have a two year success rate. He added that the success rate is best for those clients who carry through with one-on-one counseling. Last year 23 SBDC clients obtained financial backing for a total of $7,000,000, which is a lot of money to pay bac k if the businesses fail. There are many types of entrepreneurial entrepre-neurial beginnings through SBDC. Holmes said general contracting is fairly common. He has also helped start up oil field roustabouts and clothing stores. Restaurants, he said, are extremely risky and few succeed. suc-ceed. Holmes said there are many reasons why restaurants fail so often but one important reason that many new owners overlook is their employees. If die atmosphere is great and the food tastes wonderful but the server or host is rude, slow or inattentive, the customer is not likely to return. The SBDC helps research business busi-ness contacts and assists in obtaining obtain-ing needed information. One particular partic-ular case involved an elk farm. Holmes helped to research artificial insemination for the farm, plus he found breeders, suppliers and antler buyers. He assisted with a campground camp-ground by helping find industry publications and national associations. associa-tions. Holmes also said that each regional region-al office generally has a research - 25th ONLY! Bring This Coupon Into The Store And Save An Select Closeouts In Home Appliances And Lawn And Garden... Holmes has a specialty in accounting account-ing vkhile a regional director in another office specializes in importexport. By sharing their research abilities and information they can better serve SBDC clients. Information is also frequently available avail-able from the main center in New York. Holmes said approximately 65 ptrcent of his clients are women plus he has a large percentage of minorities. He said the Ute Tribe prov ides a number of opportunities and often helps pay some of the costs through loans. He speculated that women and minorities seek his assistance becau they are not bogged down with years of business tradition. He doesn't hear "because we have always done it this way" from women and minorities as he does from 30-40 year old white males who probably learned their business skills from their fathers and grandfathers. Overcoming this reliance on tradition tradi-tion can be a big problem for many businesses. Holmes said. One area that gives many local businesses trouble is the Internet. Many local proprietors don't believe the Internet is giving them any compe- d Dent And AT A GREAT PRICE. GUARANTEED: sale Q99 CRAFTSMAN 1 0-pc screwdriver set. Save $9 Includes Phillips and s,lottej. Holmes said their are "riches in niches," meaning find a need and then fill it. He mentioned a business that is doing well repairing shopping shop-ping carts for grocery stores and another that paints lines in parking lots for Mom and Pop shops. One success formula is to find a problem, prob-lem, figure out how to solve it as inexpensively as possible and obtain SBDC counseling. Holmes said the counseling is free and the seminars have a minimal cost Another role of the SBDC is to act as a regional dissemination point for federal and state procurement. Holmes researches government needs and then provides bid" opportunities oppor-tunities for local businesses. One example is a bid to the Forest Service for painting a water tower and another is compaction testing on Interstate 15. Holmes said large companies often get the main bid and smaller businesses then subcontract subcon-tract portions of the job from the large company. Clearance Items.
