"It takes a whole community to raise a child, and that is what I feel we'll be able to accomplish through this team," Stearmer stated. As a mission statement, they state, "We believe that: Education must empower students to be caring, content con-tent and contributing citizens of the world." To fulfill this statement, they provide a positive environment. environ-ment. Stearmer says that Discovery is undergoing a "refinement of philosophy," philos-ophy," to make sure that they are accomplishing everything that they really want to accomplish. Two goals that Stearmer and his administrative admin-istrative team have set: number one, to make sure that the school has assigned as-signed a higher priority to making sure that students develop certain basic skills of learning and that important im-portant as basic skills development is, the school also needs to provide students with adequate knowledge and understanding for functioning effectively and ethically in a multicultural, multi-cultural, ever changing country and interdependent world. The staff at Discovery also wants to ensure that the transition from an The if ; jtolfrW Refinance now with a fixed-rate Bi-Weekly Bi-Weekly Mortgage from Mountain America and pay off a 30-year mortgage in about 22 years or a 15-year 15-year mortgage in about 12 years. The team would also like to cultivate culti-vate these characteristics: smaller class sizes (Discovery has the highest high-est studentteacher ratio), team teaching, reliance on professional expertise and shared decision making, mak-ing, curriculum and assessments, create an enriching environment for teachers, and to have the community communi-ty become more involved. They would also like to see the technology technolo-gy improved. Mrs. Merkley advises the student council. This program gives the students stu-dents a chance to become more involved, in-volved, and to learn how to earn and manage money through fund raisers. They get to decide how they want to spend it, and although most of it goes to the school for field trips they give some of it away as a service. It helps teach the kids involved in-volved responsibility, and to learn how to plan. There is an executive board that serves all year, and other members are chosen one from each class to help for a time, and then someone else gets the opportunity. The Drama Club, led by Mr. Murphy, has been a big success, and over 100 students are involved in it, and more want to be. Accelerated reading has become very successful at Discovery with almost 100 percent participation, and students averaging reading two to three books a month. They will also be using Star Math. The staff at Discovery is always looking for new, innovative, and exciting ways to teach. The academic scores at Discovery have exceeded the state scores in the past, and they hope to continue exceeding and excelling in this area, because it is clearly, the most important im-portant part about it all. All these things are achieved through teamwork at Discovery, and as a philosophy, Stearmer has a picture that says, "TEAMWORK: Teamwork is the ability to work together to-gether toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishment ac-complishment toward organizational organization-al objectives. It is the fuel that allows al-lows common people to attain uncommon un-common results." right cost $6,709 Mountain Mortgage your style Visit your branch or todav. - year comparison qf Bi-weekly and Monthly loan at 6. 125 for Lloyd Commissioner Paid political advertisement by Laura B. Breast cancer is the most common com-mon site of cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. About 44,000 women and 300 men will die of breast cancer each year. The sad thing about this is, if caught early, almost all of these deaths could have been prevented. pre-vented. Who gets breast cancer? Almost anyone can, even men. Twelve percent per-cent of American women will develop de-velop breast cancer, but about 70 percent of this group will be cured. Factors that increase the chance of getting breast cancer include: a mother or sister with breast cancer, previous history of breast cancer yourself, having no children or having hav-ing the first child after age 30, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and being overweight. Choice increase the risk. Screening for breast cancer is very important. Most breast cancers are detected by the patient themselves. them-selves. Begin with a regular monthly month-ly breast self-exam. Breast tissue tends to be lumpy, once a woman is familiar with her normal exam, any change, new lump or bump should lead to a check up with a physician. Any woman with a breast lump should have a mammogram every year. Small breast cancers are the most curable, and it is these cancers that a mammogram will find early, before they have spread. Any lump in the breast should be examined and a mammogram performed. per-formed. Generally a biopsy should be performed on all suspicious breast masses. Some biopsies can be done with a fine needle guided by ultrasound. Other times a surgical surgi-cal biopsy must be done, but this can usually be done as an outpatient. outpa-tient. If a breast cancer is detected, the most important factor is whether it has spread beyond the breast. If the cancer has not spread, the five-year survival is better than 95 percent, if the tumor is small. If cancer has spread to the glands in the armpit this survival drops significantly. A small cancer can frequently be operated on without removing the entire breast, and requires re-quires less treatment with radiation and chemotherapy. It is clear that the most important thing a woman can do to protect herself from breast cancer is to practice monlhly breast self exams, get a regular check up from her doctor that includes a breast exam and to begin screening mammograms mammo-grams when she is 40. Ignoring a lump or putting off a check up is the worst thing you can do. The key to a cure is early detection, while the cancer is small and has not spread. Great progress in treating and curing breast cancer has been made and routine screening is the cornerstone of this success. mmzm 7 DAY 6 NIGHT HOLLYWOOD & MEXICAN BAJA CRUISE! 2 night stay at the Historic Hollywood Roosevelt or Wilshire Royale Hotels (www.hotelroyale.com) 4 night Mexican Baja Cruise, includes port charges (Catalina & Cnsenada, Mexico) Most meals included Ask about car rental, 399 transfers & tram available attraction!
