Show Fishing rod and reel checkout program for kids Vernal Express Wednesday, October 8, 1997 19 GO FISH UTAH! is a cooperative fishing program for kids. It is designed de-signed to help give young people a chance to try out recreational fishing fish-ing without having to first invest in poles and reels. The equipment checkout is sponsored by the Utah State Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and many other local and statewide private companies compa-nies and governmental recreation agencies. The checkout allows kids to use the fishing rods and reels free of charge. Local sponsors include Uintah County, Red Canyon Lodge, Red Fleet State Park and the DWR. So far, the program has apparently received only modest use locally. According to Robin O'Driscoll, Parks and Recreation employee for Uintah County, only about 20 people peo-ple checked out rods and reels this past summer from the recreation district office. "It's been a fairly active program," pro-gram," O'Driscoll said, "but could be improved upon with some advertising." adver-tising." Mike Murray, Red Fleet State Park Ranger, said the program is getting more popular. "We try to keep a few rods and reels in our check-in office so people peo-ple will see them," Murray said. He plans to try and get increased publicity pub-licity for next year in hopes of providing pro-viding more opportunity for young people. "It's a good program and kids really re-ally benefit," Murray added. "The blue gill fishing is good at Red Fleet and it's a great way to introduce intro-duce kids to fishing." To get more information about the GO FISH UTAH! program for young anglers, contact the Vernal DWR office 789-3103, Uintah County Rec. 781-5486, Red Fleet State Park 789-4432, Red Canyon Lodge 889-3759 or the program toll-free information line at 1-800-ASK-FISH. UDWR plans roadblocks During the fall and winter hunting and fishing seasons, officers from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will hold randomized administrative checkpoint roadblocks road-blocks throughout the Northeastern Region. The roadblocks are held to collect biological information from harvested har-vested game and to check hunter and angler compliance with the regulations. reg-ulations. Hunters and anglers should be prepared for short delays as wildlife officers inspect licenses, permits, equipment and game in possession.
