UT M07S by Kathleen Irving Staff Writer Vernal City council members have agreed to spend up to $7,000 to install a culvert in an open ditch along recently repaved 500 East Street. Resident Carma Hunsaker petitioned peti-tioned the Council for the improvement improve-ment last week saying the ditch, which becomes deep in some places, was hazardous to children and others who walk along the roadside. Hunsaker also told the council the ditch is usually filled with weeds and collects trash, which impedes the flow of water. After road repaving was completed complet-ed a few weeks ago, residents in the area also became concerned that because a soft shoulder was created, creat-ed, dirt from the roadside will eventually even-tually slough off into the ditch. City Manager Ken Bassett said the proposed culvert was basically a budget issue, in this case, a project for which there is no budgeted bud-geted funding. According to City Streets Supervisor Glade Allred, what began be-gan as a road overlay project on 500 East this summer turned into a complete rebuild leaving no extra funds for a culvert. Hunsaker's arguments were persuasive per-suasive to several Council members, mem-bers, however. Councilman Jim Abegglen called the ditch an eyesore eye-sore and urged the quick release of funds to place the culvert. But his fellow councilman, Matt Foley, disagreed on the urgency. "We have all sorts of places like this around town," he said. "Some are even worse than this and run water more continuously. We should culvert others first." Mayor Leonard Heeney said the only reason he could see to culvert the 540 foot stretch of ditch run- Physician receives AAFP Degree of Fellow Dr. Rodney S. Anderson of Vernal has received the Degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the national medical association representing repre-senting 85,000 family physicians, residents in family practice and medical students. The degree was awarded to approximately 500 family fam-ily physicians on Sept. 20 in conjunction con-junction with the AAFP's 49th Annual Scientific Assemble in Chicago, 111. Established in 1971, the AAFP Degree of Fellow recognizes family physicians who have distinguished themselves among their colleagues and in their communities through service to family medicine and professional pro-fessional development. This year's Fellowship class brings the total number of AAFP Fellows to more than 26,000 nationwide. No one could convince him that was an imminent im-minent concern, however. Allred said that if the project were scheduled for the next fiscal year, it would at least a year before work could begin. g76att6 We are writing this letter to express our sincere gratitude to all who were involved in helping the Jenkins family get through a horrid ordeal when two long time criminals showed up at our parent's home on the night of May 21, 1997. The two men had rubber gloves, a loaded pistol, two sets of handcuffs, two lengths of rope, a roll of duct tape and some very grave intentions for an elderly couple. cou-ple. We would like to thank Prosecutor JoAnn Stringham for doing "a job well done." We were encouraged when she was able to show the jury what a dangerous and terrorizing ordeal this was for our family. She was able to represent our feelings thoroughly. Although many hours were expended on this case, and other cases she had to work on simultaneously, she always had time to console and assure our parents that justice would be served. There were many officers involved in this case from both Vernal City and the Uintah County Sheriff's Department and even Naples City Officer Troy Slaugh, who was one of the first on the scene and transported our father to the hospital. Sheriff Rick Hawkins was waiting at the hospital, overseeing the entire investigation and was present when the verdict was read. We would like to thank all officers who assisted in the apprehension appre-hension and investigation and to those who testified to the facts in this case. Thank you officers, Steve Hatzadakis, Bo Faircloth, Jeff Merrell, Wayne Hollenbeke, J.R. Oaks, Derik Urban, and Vance Norton. Your training and dedication to your job were essential. Thank you bailiffs, Cort McKee and Jason Newman for being so professional pro-fessional in the courtroom. Thank you Honorable Judge A. Lynn Payne for being so thorough in your duties as the judge, insuring no mistrial. You showed that you are very wise and impartial. Your main concern was that all parties par-ties were treated fairly. Also two people that are very important in all cases are the Clerk of the Court, Jo Roberts, and Court Recorder, Russell Morgan. To our friends and family that gave us much needed support, we hope to repay you with loyalty to each of you. Last but by far not least, thank you to the men and women who served as jurors. You showed our community that society will not tolerate tol-erate this kind of activity. You took time from your busy lives and families to do a job nobody likes to do. You did it well and should feel proud. You helped get two predators off the streets which may safeguard you or someone you know from being their next victim. In closing we are sure we must have left someone out. There are so many people behind the scene that we just do not know but your contributions are equally appreciated.
