Show Vernal Express Wednesday, October 8, 1997 13 Volunteers restore and enchance Musket Shot Springs during National Public Lands Day. 45 participate in National Lands Day Volunteers and Bureau of Land Management employees combined efforts last Saturday, Sept. 27, to host the first annual National Public Lands Day local event. Forty-five volunteers, including Cub Scouts, the Vernal Junior High School Escape Club, retirees and others worked together with local BLM employees to restore and enhance en-hance the Musket Shot Springs interpretive in-terpretive and recreation site located on US Hwy 40 seven miles east of Jensen. Saturday Morning began cool and damp but everyone showed up with enthusiasm and work gloves. The group hauled gravel and asphalt in wheel barrows, pulled weeds, stained 50 parking barricades and painted a hand rail. Two new portals entrance signs were set in concrete and an interpretive display was reformed re-formed and set with new asphalt. At the conclusion of the project, the Escape Club reviewed all of the interpretive panels as a way of learning more about the public land heritage, archeology, history, geology geolo-gy and hang gliding, all of which contributes to making Musket Shot Springs an attraction for 40,000 visitors vis-itors a year. Public meeting on draft supplement set Central Utah Water Conservancy District will hold a public meeting Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the board room of the District headquarters at 355 West University Parkway in Orem. The purpose of the meeting is to receive re-ceive comments on the draft 1998 Supplement to the Water Management Improvement Plan to be submitted to the Secretary of the Interior by Jan. 1, 1998. The Supplement includes the following: fol-lowing: a District-wide water conservation con-servation goal for CUWCD, an inventory in-ventory of water conservation measures, mea-sures, an assessment of previously implemeanted projects, a comparative compara-tive analysis of proposed water conservation con-servation measures, and a schedule of implementation of water conservation conser-vation measures for the following five years. Copies of the draft Supplement are available at the District's office or by mail by calling the District office of-fice at 801-226-7171. Public comment com-ment on the draft Supplement will be accepted until Nov. 14, 1997. Written comments may be sent to the address above anytime during that time period. This free program is part of National Depression Screening Day. Individuals will be referred to a nearby site by calling 1-800-573-4433. National Depression Screening Day, held each year during Mental Illness Awareness Week, was developed de-veloped by Harvard psychiatrist, Dr. Douglas Jacobs. Last year more the 83,000 people attended screenings screen-ings at 2,400 sites nationwide. Participants will hear a brief talk on the causes, symptoms, and treatments treat-ments of depression, an anonymous written screening test for depression depres-sion and have the opportunity to discuss the results with a mental health professional. Depression strikes more than 17 million Americans each year, according ac-cording to the national Institute of Mental Health. Fewer than half seek treatment even though treatment treat-ment can help 80 percent of those affected. Screening Day sites in Utah provide the depression screenings screen-ings as a community service, to help educate the public about the signs and symptoms of depression and to encourage those who my be vulnerable to seek evaluation and help.
