Show 7 Vernal Express Wednesday, May 8, 1996 21 Track team prepares for region with BYU meet by Eric F. Pye Sports Writer The Uintah High School track team took advantage of the BYU Invitational last Saturday in Provo to tune up a bit for the region 10 championship today (Wednesday) and Thursday. The meet was billed as the largest of its kind in the United States with over 3,500 athletes competing from Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado and Nevada. The meet has run continuously con-tinuously since 1911. Each team was limited to 20 events. Despite few of his athletes actually placing anywhere near the top of the combined 5A, 4A and 3A meet, head coach Gary Galley felt it was a positive experience for his team and one that would help prepare pre-pare them for the coming challenges of region and state. Some of the events went 80 deep. "It was a positive experience for our kids even if few if any of them had a chance to place, let alone win an event. The level of competition and intensity was what we wanted to expose them to," Galley said. Mission accomplished. "It was incredible. There were great athletes in every event nine or ten deep," an impressed Eli Long said. That from the one Uintah athlete ath-lete who did win an event the 110 hurdles with a season best time of 14.45. Eli also placed in the top ten in the long jump with a state qualifying quali-fying leap of 20'2". Eli also recorded record-ed the fastest 300 hurdle time, although al-though it was later ruled his trail leg had broken the plane of the lane next to him around the final corner and was disqualified because of it. The only other male Uintah athlete ath-lete to score team points was 400 dash man Chad Galley who placed fifth in the event with a time of 51.50, qualifying him for state in that event. The two athletes efforts placed Uintah 15th overall on the boys side. For the girls, no participant placed in the scoring although Anna Glenn came the closest with a 7th place finish in the long jump. Her leap of 16'4" qualified her for 3 A state. Both Andrea Whiting and Carrie Barlow qualified in the 3200 with times of 12:31 and 12:41 respectively. respec-tively. As for the region 10 championship going on Wednesday and Thursday at Wasatch, Coach Galley feels Park City is the favorite in both divisions although he states the Uintah boys have a shot at catching the Miners. Galley picks the Lady Utes to place second. The following are results of the BYU Invitational meet held last Saturday, May 4 in Provo. (Q.T. qualifying time for state.
